I've been a maintenance man for over twenty years and it becomes obvious to me sometimes when I am watching home improvement shows on tv that not all of the hosts of these shows actually know about the projects they are reporting on. This leads me to my next observation which is that not all of the projects shown on these shows are easy enough for the average do it yourself homebody to accomplish and may require a contractor to step in and get things back on track from time to time. Projects that may look simple on tv can get out of hand quick if you don't know what you are doing, especially anything that has to do with plumbing and electrical. Even after many years of plumbing experience things can still go wrong. The difference between a homeowner and a professional is knowing what to do next when problems arise.
Electrical problems can be troublesome because electricity isn't something you can actually see. You will need a multitester, also known as an electrical meter to determine whether you have current or not or whether a fuse is good or bad. Anyone that is interested in doing electrical work around their house should take a class if for no other reason to find out how much they don't know. Plumbing can make a mess of your house. Electricity can be lethal and start fires if not done correctly.
Keep in mind that you can never save enough money to make it worthwhile if you are in danger of doing damage to yourself or your house. Even professionals make mistakes and if you are ever in question about whether you should take on a project or not, then you probably shouldn't. Get advice from a professional before you take on a big project. What you learn might amaze you and keep you from making a costly mistake.
