Sharing is green. Living longer, falling wages, high college debts, the high cost of living are all powering larger households. 16% of the U.S. population ? 49 million people ? live in a household with at least two adult generations or a grandparent and another generation. This is up from 28 million, or 12% of the population in 1980, according to a report titled ?The Return of the Multigenerational Family Household,? from the Pew Research Center.

John McIlwain, senior resident fellow and Urban Land Institute /J. Ronald Terwilliger Chair for Housing observes that although the U.S. population continues to grow steadily, adding 2.5 million people each year, ?U.S. household formation has crashed, dropping to less than one-third of the long-term average of 1.4 million a year.?

Larger families living under one roof, allow for the pooling of resources ? less car trips, less packaging, more people enjoying the same air conditioning / heating systems.

Beyond the efficiency, the Pew study found a variety of positives in multigenerational living. Regardless of gender, race, age, income, and education level, ?older adults who live alone are less healthy and they more often feel sad or depressed than their counterparts who live with a spouse or with others.?

Working parents can always use the help of an extra adult around the house.

Demographic population shifts, along with financial restructuring, global competition, and climate change will alter family housing as we have come to know it. Economy, working parents, and scarcity of natural resources will grow household size, with children and grandparents living under one roof.

The next trend in property remodeling ~ green adaptive reuse for multigenerational housing?
