"Home Staging Tips ~ Making a Connection with Buyers!"

As a Home Stager I try to make a connection with potential buyers with every home I stage. Creating an environment that allows buyer's to see themselves living in a home that they are previewing. In one of my previous post's I talked about how using the same color throughout your home gives it a cohesive look and allows the buyers eyes and minds to rest without an emotional jolt of different colors from room to room.

You want to create a sense of peace and calmness throughout your home. Besides color one other way is to create vignettes that tell a story or create a scene that will again let the buyers see themselves living there. It could be an outdoor setting by the pool with some lounge chairs and a pitcher, drinking glasses and a garden magazine. It could be vegetables on a cutting board ready to be chopped and put in a pot to make some homemade soup. Let the buyers envision being a part of your home, entertaining, having fun and enjoying themselves.

Let your Home be a Captivating Home that buyers find irresistible!

Can you just see yourself relaxing by the pool!

Lounging as you sip some Lemonade and read a Garden Magazine!

How about sitting by the Firepit at Sunset and roasting Marshmellows!

Don't have a pool outback no problem.... you can create the same scene indoors as well!

I don't know if everyone loves Chocolate like I do... but if Chocolate is a favorite of yours create a scene with it!

Soft tones in the Living Room or in the first room you walk into always help to set the tone for the rest of the house!

Of course we don't want to forget the Romance in the Master Bedroom... candles, refreshments and luxurious bedding give any home a feel of a Retreat or Getaway from it all!

Are you allowing your potential buyers to see themselves living in your home?

Or Entertaining there???

Make an emotional connection with every potential buyer that walks through your door!!!

"Because you never get a second chance... to make a Great First Impression!"

Question by jaycee: how do i connect two ISPs using 1 exclusively for online gaming and the other for internet surfing and chat?
I have 4 pcs which i use for surfing and youtube and 16 which i use for online gaming.how can i setup 2 ISPs, 1 for exclusive surfing and chatting while the other for online gaming so that the speed of my gaming wont be affected if youtube is running?

Best answer:

Answer by FlMacGary
You will need to contact your ISP for a second account. If its by DSL, get a second phone line for ?naked DSL.? If its by cable, they may have to run a second cable line to your home.

Regardless, you have to pay extra for this.

You need two multiport routers (one for each ISP connection), and a multiport switch for the 16 gaming computers.

Everyone has phobias?

We have all seen movies and read dozens of hundreds of articles in newspapers and blogs on the net on a variety of phobias that people have in this world. Some are obvious, such as the common phobias such as fear of heights (acrophobia) and the fear of water (hydrophobia). But the question is that not all have phobias, or only some?

The answer to the question above is still too long especially since in most cases, people do not come by their phobias or are too ignorant to notice. An example could be a person afraid of a polar bear is his, for example. If that person has lived his life in Africa as a continent, and even a polar bear seen in real life, it's almost impossible that he might never discover the hidden phobia.

Scientists believe that all this world has to phobias. But whether large or small, that the fears may be, still scared and classified as> Phobia. Some phobias are obvious and dangerous, while others and still can not harm humans. Scientists say that the reason for phobias not only the personal experiences that we experienced in our lives. It is genetic, as discovered recently.

Some specific phobias are known, some families are transmitted from generation to generation in. So the conclusion of the various studies by researcherstaken us closer to answer the question at you, forever, if each of us has really phobias, or only in some people.

Newt Gingrich, Small-Business Owner - NYTimes.com

Last Sunday, Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and current Republican presidential candidate, told America that he was a small-business owner. The revelation came on CBS?s ?Face the Nation,? as the candidate tried to deflect questions (PDF) from Bob Schieffer, the host, about his recently revealed debts to Tiffany and Company.

After Mr. Schieffer posited that the debt ?just sticks out like a sore thumb,? Mr. Gingrich responded: ?If the U.S. government was debt-free as I am, everybody in America would be celebrating. I think I have proven I can manage money. As a small-business man, I run four small businesses. They have been profitable. They?ve employed people. You know, this is the opposite of the Obama model.?

It turns out that Mr. Gingrich ? whose interest in small businesses has been previously noted in this blog ? has operated at least five companies, according to his spokesman, Rick Tyler. The companies, with one notable exception, mostly appear to be in the business of marketing Newt Gingrich.

For example, Gingrich Communications was responsible for promoting Mr. Gingrich?s public appearances, said Mr. Tyler, including his Fox News contract (canceled when Mr. Gingrich declared his candidacy) and his Web site, newt.org. ?It was built on Newt as a brand,? he said. At its height, the company employed 15 people, Mr. Tyler said. However, the company was dissolved once Mr. Gingrich began his campaign. ?You can?t have a company manage a brand while you have a campaign manage a brand,? Mr. Tyler said. The campaign has taken over the Web site.

Some of the Gingrich Communications employees went to the campaign, others to a separate company, Gingrich Productions. According to the company?s Web site, it is ?a performance and production company featuring the work of Newt and Callista Gingrich. Newt and Callista host and produce historical and public policy documentaries, write books, record audio books and voiceovers, produce photographic essays, and make television and radio appearances.?

Gingrich Productions, Mr. Tyler said, is largely about Callista Gingrich. ?It was her company, her vision,? he said. It was originally formed in 2007 as a subsidiary of Gingrich Communications, and today has about five employees. Another former Gingrich Communications subsidiary, FGH Publications, was ?responsible for production of historical and fictional novels,? Mr. Tyler said in an e-mail.

Gingrich Holdings, with about three employees, provided back-office support for the other companies in the Gingrich portfolio. Mr. Tyler said that the campaign had not paid the Gingrich companies for anything, including the Web site.

Yet the oldest Gingrich business doesn?t fit this mold ? or any other. When Mr. Gingrich organized the Gingrich Group, in 1999, it was a standard-issue ex-legislator consultancy with a diverse roster of corporate clients. (Technically, it was not a lobbying firm.) But eventually Mr. Gingrich became interested in health care reform and ?in having an organization that could attract those kinds of cutting edge companies that were providing solutions to some of the biggest problems in health care,? said David Merritt, Gingrich Group executive vice president. ?Over time, those nonhealth clients were dropped, and then the Gingrich Group became the Center for Health Transformation.? (Mr. Gingrich sold his interest in the business to his partners when he became a presidential candidate.)

The Center for Health Transformation is now, as Mr. Tyler described it, a ?for-profit membership organization? that seeks to foster an innovative, intelligent, and, above all, free-market health care system. About 80 to 90 member companies and organizations pay $5,000 to $200,000 to help shape the debate and, as Mr. Merritt put it, ?to participate in developing some of the solutions that we think will transform the system.? A handful of companies remain consulting clients.

It?s an innovative proposition in a couple respects. As a post-Congressional career, Mr. Merritt said, it?s unusual for being ?solutions-based and not based on lobbying for a particular company or carrying somebody?s water.? Similarly, he noted, it stands apart from many member-based organizations, which typically take direction from the membership. Finally, it?s a novel model for a public policy organization, since most are nonprofit and tax-exempt.

Mr. Tyler agreed. ?I think we invented it,? he said.

Top Tricks for Choosing a Domain Name | Internet and Online Business

Posted on | May 30, 2011 | No Comments

domain nameYour domain name must be memorable, descriptive and easy to spell, however there are other factors to think about when selecting a name to make sure it serves you nicely in years to come. Whether you are selecting a reputation for a brand new product, a service, company launch or even just a blog, it?s advisable that you observe some very fundamental pointers to make sure you get it right. Here are a few of the web business?s ?prime tips? that can assist you create a great area name.

1. Preserve it related:

When someone hears about your area title for the first time, it?s a good idea to make it descriptive enough so they get an excellent indication of what they will discover after they go to your website. When you will have come up with a couple of decisions, ask your friends, household, colleagues or purchasers what they think. A name that you just really feel is perfect may be too troublesome for others to recollect and even spell. Examine that your area identify is simple to say and understand when given out over the phone.

Doing the market research in your name (or simply testing it out by writing it down in various codecs with out hyphens or capitalisation) may be frustrating and send you back to the drawing board a couple of times, however it will be worthwhile within the end. There are lots of who have fallen foul of this straightforward market research rule. Listed here are a couple of examples of how the owners of some domains didn?t do their research; some with fairly amusing outcomes:

Initially, the wealthy & well-known individuals? database known as ?Who Represents? merely ran with their firm title which, as a domain title, reads as whorepresents.com; the now legendary stationery shop referred to as ?Pen Island? that was registered as penisland.net; an internet portal called ?Specialists Trade? the place skilled programmers trade recommendation and views may be discovered at expertsexchange.com; The ?Therapist Finder? directory thought therapistfinder.com was the perfect name for them, whereas ?Mole Station Native Nursery? proudly call their web site molestationnursery.com

2. Incorporate memorable & associated key phrases:

If you first begin taking a look at a new area identify it?s helpful to have half a dozen phrases or keywords in thoughts that greatest reflect what subject your web site will likely be about. You possibly can then start to re-organize them to create inspiration on your title which can be easier for customers to remember. For example, if you?re launching an internet site for a domestic cleansing service, quite than simply operating with the long-winded company identify, we might firstly advocate you jot down a number of simple phrases and phrases that folks would use in an internet search to discover a enterprise like yours. For instance ?cleaner, housekeeping, maid, chores, assist me clean my home? etc. You would additionally contemplate prefixes akin to ?my?, ?your?, ?our? etc. Playing round with these phrases and key phrases will soon get the ideas flowing ? keep in mind you?re looking for a phrase or word that can mechanically spring to mind in the imagination of someone searching for your product or service.

3. Hold your domain title brief, simple to spell and simple to recollect:

Short names are simpler to remember and usually easier to type. Although you may register a website with up to 63 characters, we advise you register the shortest name obtainable that guests will associate along with your web site ? generally a dozen characters or much less excluding the suffix. Shorter names have the added benefit of taking over less area in printed media such as press commercials or on business cards.

Individuals are usually quite lazy on the subject of remembering and typing in domain names, so if yours needs a sure degree of focus to kind in accurately, then you would frustrate potential clients who get it unsuitable or, even worse, send them to someone else?s website. Many people may want to tell others about your web site, and this beneficial word-of-mouth promoting will solely work if they?ll simply remember your identify and do not have to consider difficult spellings, unfamiliar words or hyphens.

Generally, firms register a website title utilizing the full firm identify and another model that?s shorter and easier to remember. Some go the extra mile and register widespread misspellings of their name. It is a great method of defending your name and guarding in opposition to anybody else registering one thing similar to yours. Also you don?t need a separate website or internet page for every, as your website designer can re-direct all of your domain names to go to only one site.

4. Make your area name distinctive:

Don?t be tempted to decide on a name that would develop into confused with someone else?s web site ? it is a automotive crash waiting to happen! This contains plurals, hyphenations or misspellings of any already current domain names that you do not own. As we?ve mentioned earlier than, people are typically quite lazy in terms of remembering and typing in names; so they might simply be forgiven for lacking out the hyphens (or an ?s? on the end). This in flip might lead to them visiting the flawed web site ? and within the industrial world that would mean you losing a sale as your customers buy the product from another website with an identical sounding name.

Another reason for registering a novel domain name is to keep away from any risk of infringement on someone else?s copyright. We have all heard the urban legend of the bored schoolboy who went on line at some point and found his favourite international pop band had not registered their identify as a domain. He registered it and promptly bought it to the band?s document label for hundreds of pounds. At the moment, stories like this are few and much between. Although there are still folks out there attempting to make a quick buck from industrial enterprises who fail to register their very own brands as a website name, these firms may have invested a fortune of their brands they usually?ll not roll over and pay out with out a struggle by means of the courts.

5. Avoid numerals and do not hyphenate:

You can?t use spaces or symbols if you register a website title, you can solely use letters, numbers and dashes (hyphens). Except you?re a nationally recognised model name (for example Phones4U) then using numbers and hyphens could make it a slow drawn-out course of to give your area title out verbally. Having to say ?hyphen? in-between every word or clarify over the cellphone whether or not it is a 2, two or to; a 4, 4 or for and so forth, can all be very time consuming. This additionally breaks both the principles of creating your name simple to remember and simple to type.

6. Only register a site title if the dot-com is out there too:

For these registering a site identify within the UK then you may at present select from the following extensions:.com,.co.uk,.web,.me.uk,.org,.org.uk,.biz,.data,.tv,.eu,.mobi,.me,.tel,.co and.at.

Your online business could also be based mostly within the UK and you might by no means intend to commerce abroad, so chances are you?ll wrongly assume you solely need to buy your domain with a.co.uk suffix. We at all times advise to solely register a name if the dot-com model is accessible too. There are many totally different extensions (or suffixes) accessible and we normally advocate you purchase the.co.uk,.web and.mobi versions in addition to the dot-com. That manner if somebody remembers your area identify however not the suffix, there is a honest probability they?re going to assume it?s dot-com ? it?s the most common extension that many people strive when searching for a website. So, should you don?t register the dot-com model of your web site?s domain title then someone else may purchase it; your prospects might then unintentionally take their business to another person?s site. And don?t worry, you don?t need to have a separate website for every domain identify suffix, as a number of names can point to the identical net address. You may only need to use the.co.uk suffix on your area title (as the BBC does), however they do nonetheless personal the dot-com model of their title and re-direct it to.co.uk, which in our minds is crucial.

Online Dating ? The Pros and Cons of Taking That Leap of Faith ...

Online dating comes with horror stories and success stories and the bottom line in if someone should use online dating lies within that person.? Online dating is not for the weak at heart or the naive.? If you are either, online dating is not a very good option for you, honestly.? Online dating is not like meeting someone out in public.? In the perfect world it would be nice to think that everyone profile was 100% honest, but this is not the perfect world and not all profiles reflect truly the real person behind the profile.? However, there are some that do.

The best way someone should determine if online dating is for them is to weigh out the pros and cons of online dating.?

Pros:?

  • ?You can meet people from all geographical areas, which open dating options vastly.
  • ?Anyone from the age of 18 and up can use online dating

  • ?You can choose from thousands of possibilities.
  • ?Do not have to deal with face-to-face rejections.
  • ?It is easier for people who are not as assertive to flirt online then in public.
  • ?Some sites offer compatibility matching
  • ?Some sites are free even to communicate and some are fairly reasonable in price.
  • ?It is a fun way to learn about people and cultures as well as brush up on your communication and flirting? skills.
  • ?Online dating makes connecting with other singles very easy.
  • ?You can find a date if you want the very first time you log in.
  • ?You can focus your space to a certain radius from your home location right down to color of hair.
  • ?If the person is honest, you can learn a lot about someone in a short period of time.
  • ?You can choose how much information you are willing to share and do not have to worry about meeting someone in public that ends out being someone less then desirable and they follow you home or begin stalking you.?
  • ?There have been many successful relationships that have started from an online dating site.

Cons

  • Not everyone is honest.? This is a huge con because it envelopes many factors from martial status to looks and to intent.? A person can portray himself or herself to be anyone they want to be online.
  • Men can out number women, which may be good for women but lousy for men.
  • Fraudulent profiles used to collect emails or scam people out of money.
  • Player profiles.? Those are the ones that only interest is to see how many scores they can make and have no real desire to have a real relationship although portray that they are seeking their one and only.
  • Unfortunately, there are pedophiles that make profiles seeking members with children.? This is a real risk.? So be wise in your online and off line dating habits.? Never give out your home address nor introduce a date to your children until well after you have gotten to know them.
  • Free sites attract more members that have ill intent.? Be careful when deciding to meet a person.? Also, keep in mind that even though someone may be on a paid site his or her intent is not always necessarily genuine.? Don?t fall for the line, ?Would I be paying for a site if I was looking for just anyone???
  • Some dating sites can be quite pricey and even though they guarantee you will find a match and or your next 6 months is free is not a guarantee you will actually find a match, you just get six more months of looking.??
  • Even if a person post their real picture it may not be a genuine reflection of who they are.? It can be outdated, before they put on 200 pounds, or touched up.?
  • People have a tendency to let their guard down after talking to someone on line for a while and start to give out personal information.? There are predators online that are highly skilled at making you feel safe when in all actually you are walking into a dangerous trap.?
  • People can easily get caught up on the internet life and stop looking? in the traditional fashion.? Online dating should only accent your dating possibilities.? Not totally replace them.?
  • People can quickly develop the grass is greener affect and with the thousands of options pass up viable partners always thinking there is yet one better out there.
  • Although they say the social stigma is gone in regards online dating, not many will still admit that the person they are dating they met online.? People still look at it as a dangerous option and not a real way of building a relationship.? It is not a alternative nor should it be used as an alternative in building a relationship.? You should only talk to a person on line long enough to see if you have enough in common and then take it to the real world.? It should not be used as the foundation of building your relationship.?
  • With the large geographical possibilities, you have to ask yourself if you are willing to relocate.?
  • Online dating sites and forums can become addictive and time consuming.? A person can end up spending hours upon hours looking at profiles, responding to messages to the point of obsession.?
  • It is harder to really know if the person you are talking to is being forthcoming with their background.? They can have a long criminal history or a serious STD and you may not find out until it is too late.?

Online dating is not for everyone.? You have to use common sense in both online and off line dating.? It is just some are a better judge of character and can smell a smoke screen through even through the internet.? After knowing the pros and cons, only you can make the decision if online dating is for you.

Jailbreaking Your iPhones: Legal

?

?

?

?

Every three years the U.S. Copyright Office reviews the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) and authorizes exceptions to it. Last year they?allowed six exceptions including?jailbreaking and unlocking your phone, and ripping?DVD?s for noncommercial new works.

In the past Apple had the right to charge ?$2,500 ?in a government fine anytime someone ?jailbroke? or changed the operating system on their iPhones. While Apple never levied that a fine be paid it has filed an objection to the current copyright law exceptions. The Copyright Office has also made it legal to ?unlock? your iPhone, letting it use cellphone providers other than AT&T.

Apple, annoyed at the new laws, is now going out of its way?to void any warranties?for jailbroken iPhones. Earlier this month jailbreaking apps were also released for the iPhone 4. Anyone looking to jailbreak their iPhone merely has to google ?jailbreak? for step-by-step instructions. As the iPhone has gotten more and more popular so has jailbreaking, the market for unlicensed apps and software is so huge, it?s starting ?to rival iTunes.

Metadoxy: Linkdump: Immigration

The Wall Street Journal recommends some fiction for your library, which I have not read, but sounds interesting. (Cannot be excerpted, check out the article for very brief reviews)

The Economist says more legal immigration is low-hanging fruit.

At a time when America is concerned about excess housing supply and anxious to boost its innovative capacity it is madness that so many willing immigrants, including high-skilled workers, including those educated in America, find it difficult to impossible to gain permission to work in the country on a stable, long-term basis.
Annie Lowry agrees.
The pro-super-immigrant data abounds. According to the Hamilton Project, immigrants are 30 percent more likely to start a business than U.S.-born citizens. Immigrants with college degrees are three times as likely to file patents as the domestically born. And all that entrepreneurial gusto really adds up. Economist Jennifer Hunt of McGill estimates that the contributions of immigrants with college degrees increased the U.S.'s GDP per capita by between 1.4 and 2.4 percent in the 1990s.
Despite these success stories, the United States still discourages foreign-born entrepreneurs. The H1-B visa program allows employers to bring in highly skilled workers but grants only 85,000 new temporary visas per year. Many recipients need to leave the country when their contracts end, giving them no incentive to put down roots and start businesses. The student visa program also allows in tens of thousands of the most talented, driven students from overseas, only to push most of them out again once their education is finished.
Bryan Caplan directs us to Tino Sanandaji on the negative political effects of allowing more immigration.
Though ignored by proponents of the ethnic-diversity-and-redistribution, minorities also get to vote, and they vote overwhelmingly for the left. This effect is dominant when we are discussing free migration, because with open borders in a world where 700 million people have told Gallup they would like to migrate right now, sooner or later the immigrants will become the majority of voters and make the political preferences of the natives irrelevant.
And now, some cartoons from the Internet:*?*Yes, this is overkill on the pithy graphics. Yes, political cartoons oversimplify issues. I still think they're worth including.

Gillmor Gang 5.21.11 (TCTV)

The Gillmor Gang ? Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, Dick Hardt, and Steve Gillmor ? got all LinkedIn in the wake of the startup's successful IPO. Amid the fear mongering about another tech bubble, it seemed more likely that LinkedIn was the first of at least a trio of big social plays going public. Facebook and Twitter seem no brainers, each with their own dynamics in terms of revenue plus virality. And then there's Groupon and maybe Zynga. But the real question was not whether hype trumps value, but what's next as the intersection of technology and media accelerates. This year's broadcast upfronts seemed primed for disruption, with most networks junking their entire drama debuts from a year ago in favor of big budget sci-fi and Sheenless comedies. Meanwhile Netflix continues to mushroom as it becomes the next HBO, or some supernode unlike anything since the agencies took over from the film studios in the '50s. King Harvest will surely come.

Bill's Bottom Feeder: Where are we?...

As to the rapture? how do we know that there wasn?t one and we are now all in heaven (or?), and it?s just like it was on earth. After all, the good reverend can?t be located this morning. Maybe HE got left behind..

Anyway, stretching the analogy a bit, we did experience a little bit of if not heaven, maybe nirvana or close to it at that event we attended in Baltimore on Saturday night. As I mentioned it was held in the Baltimore Museum of Art, encompassing most of the second floor. Galleries there included statuary, some impressionists, pre Christian mosaics, and some portrait galleries. Food and drink were not allowed (MFO approved) in them, but you could park your drink at the door and then go appreciate stuff by Picasso, Gauguin, Corot, and so on. Maybe there was another gallery someplace but I was surprised that there wasn?t any works by Monet or Manet.

But of course to your loyal Bottom Feeder, it?s all about the food. The event was catered by Classic Catering which is apparently the ?big dog? in Baltimore. My initial reaction upon entering the spaces was that there was a tremendous amount of staff. They were everywhere almost your personal assistant. Unlike last year (a couple of ticks off) we were not met with a beverage on a tray, however there were immediate offers of little bites. From silver trays. And here I was presented with two things I had never experienced before. The napkins that were offered were cloth, not paper. Just a little four by four square with linen borders and a mesh type center. Very tasteful. And if you selected an item that was on a skewer (petite crab cake, small bite of chicken) or maybe a marinated shrimp a second server was following behind with another silver tray and a napkin folded as to form a pocket. ?May I take your skewer/shrimp tail, sir?? How civilized. There were several bars strewn throughout the halls connecting the galleries where you could order a drink. MFO asked if she could get a Gimlet. ?Of course Ma?am would Gray Goose Vodka be all right??. Not wanting to do the drink test (there were small lines at this point), I asked if they had scotch (expecting the dreaded Dewar?s answer). Why yes we do. Is Johnny Walker black Acceptable? It is to me. I started to keep notes of the offerings of things on the silver plates, but soon became overwhelmed and gave it up. Mini crab cakes, artichoke/spinach on crostini, seared tuna with corn relish and a hot pepper, brie melted between slivers of flatbread, creamy hummus on toasted baguettes, little spoons of roasted lobster, and many more that I of course can?t remember. And you never were wanting for something in your hand, more often than not you had your mouth occupied and had to say ?not yet? as offers were pretty much continual. Here and there live music was being played, a jazz guitarist here, a small ensemble there, with sound levels conducive to conversation.

While the passed things were circulating, food stations began to be occupied, again with more forgotten than remembered items. Lamb chops cut from a rack, juicy and pink, sliced tenderloin as you like it, a traditional Paella with chicken, shrimp, and sausage, crab cakes made to order, grilled rockfish, marinated chicken breast strips, and at each station were salads (heirloom tomatoes with feta (or goat, I can?t remember). I?m not even sure I hit all the stations. The food was very good. Again trying to recall ?last year? I seem to remember that the station food was plated for you rather than having to hold out a plate. A small, but noticeable thing. With my rockfish, I decided to have a glass of wine (no more JWB?s for me at this point), so asked if they had a Pinot. We do, its Adelsheim. That will do.

Passed desserts began to come out, again a bewildering amount of choices between small spoons of cheesecakes, little pieces of apple walnut tart, small champagne glasses of mousse, lemon meringue squares, even chocolate chip cookies. Reluctantly we left and headed south for home.

It was a wonderful evening, and well worth the hassle of up and back, late to bed, and so forth. Of course you can?t help but compare this experience with the one last year in DC (Catered by Occasions), and maybe it isn?t fair. I think maybe the Renwick Gallery is a bit better venue, we found the museum a bit harder to mingle, being a series of ?hallways? and separate rooms. The double servers for the passed appetizers were a plus for Classic, but the already plated station food from Occasions was nice. If I had to pick, I might lean toward the DC event, but geez, both were just great. What a great opportunity.

Comes the dawn:

After rolling in well after midnight, a short sleep in the digs ended with getting ready to help with the First Annual BeerFest held at Historic St. Mary?s City. Alert readers might recall that I was part of the planning committee, and received an education in dealing with Brewer?s Associations, Permits, Vendors, Licenses, Caterers, and so forth. At the beginning of the day, we didn?t really know what to expect. Other events were happening in the county, it was a beer fest not a wine fest, who knows. We had hoped for at least 500 visitors. Well, guess what? Final numbers are yet to be known, but it is generally believed we nearly tripled that. Despite a couple of growing pains with quantities and logistics, it turned out to be a great event. GeeZer and the 25th Hour Band were just great, folks left the festival to go hear Woods Tea Company, came back, tasted more beer, had some food, and generally enjoyed themselves. There was cider making demonstrations, lessons in home brewing, craft tents, and something for everybody. All this despite not having the legislation in place to allow ?off site sales?, which next year will be a feature. And the best part is that all the proceeds will go to support educational programs at Historic St. Mary?s City and help the museum grow. As they say about the rose bowl, planning for next year?s event begins the day after this year?s. And that?s not kidding. First meeting Wednesday.

So, if you came, thank you, and if you didn?t make it this year, plan on next. It will be late in May again, bigger or at least better than ever...so watch for news.

And I guess if you came to the Fest, it was alright to be

The Simple Dollar ? Review: Do the Work

Every Sunday, The Simple Dollar reviews a personal finance or other book of interest. Also available is a complete list of the hundreds of book reviews that have appeared on The Simple Dollar over the years.

A while back, I reviewed Steven Pressfield?s wonderful book The War of Art. In it, Pressfield discussed not only the challenge of creating something new, but the challenge inherent in earning money from it.

The core of Pressfield?s argument is that earning money isn?t a matter of simply having a great idea. You have to add work to the equation ? and, often, it?s a lot of work that needs to be added.

That?s the idea behind this short book by Pressfield, one which I quite enjoyed. You only succeed at what you want to do if you actually buckle down and do the work. Thinking about it isn?t enough. ?Positive thinking? about it isn?t enough. You have to do the work if you want success.

The book is filled with a lot of great ideas, but they?re delivered in very short bites. This is a book that?s wonderful to pick up and dip your toe in if you?d like (or dive in quite deep), but it?s not a good one to discuss in a chapter-by-chapter form (because it?s not in a chapter form). Instead, I just pulled out a few pieces from the book that I found particularly thought provoking.

The three dumbest guys I can think of: Charles Lindbergh, Steve Jobs, Winston Churchill. Why? Because any smart person who understood how impossibly arduous were the tasks they had set themselves would have pulled the plug before he even began.

Most tasks that we have before us in our lives seem almost overwhelming. Dig out from under a mountain of debt? Write a novel, revise it, and get someone to publish it? Launch your own business? Rise to the top of the hierarchy at work?

We?ve all got big mountains to climb in our lives, and it?s often very easy to just say they?re impossible and that we?ll never climb them. They?re not impossible, though. One only has to search for a little bit to see that it is possible to climb that mountain. Someone is the boss. Someone has published a novel. Someone has reached debt freedom.

You?re next ? if you?re willing to work.

Don?t prepare. Begin. Remember, our enemy is not lack of preparation; it?s not the difficulty of the project or the state of the marketplace or the emptiness of our bank account. The enemy is Resistance. The enemy is our chattering brain, which, if we give it so much as a nanosecond, will start producing excuses, alibis, transparent self-justifications, and a million reasons why we can?t/shouldn?t/won?t do what we know we need to do. Start before you?re ready.

It?s incredibly easy to give into resistance whenever we meet it. It?s much easier to do nothing. It?s much easier to criticize the works of others than to produce your own. It?s much easier to pass the work off to someone else.

It?s hard to accomplish that thing you?re facing. It?s hard to produce your own thing. It?s hard to simply do the work yourself.

Yet, who?s rewarded in the end? The critics or the doers? The people who do nothing or the people who accomplish something? The people who take on the task or the people who look for a way to pass it on?

Stephen King has confessed that he works every day. Fourth of July, his birthday, Christmas. [...] How much time can you spare every day? For that interval, close the door and ? short of a family emergency or the outbreak of World War III ? don?t let ANYBODY in. Keep working. Keep working. Keep working.

I have a novel in my head. I have a piano piece I need to learn. It?s so easy to put them off.

Instead, I think I?ll just shut the door for an hour each day and see if I can make these things happen.

When we ship, we?re exposed. That?s why we?re so afraid of it. When we ship, we?ll be judged. The real world will pronounce upon our work and upon us. When we ship, we can fail. When we ship, we can be humiliated.

The single scariest thing about starting The Simple Dollar was the criticism. It can be very hard to hear the negative statements of others.

Over time, I?ve learned that you only get those negative statements if you?re doing something of worth. Negative statements either come from people who genuinely care enough about your work to contact you or from people who are jealous enough of your work (or insecure enough in their own work, having little or nothing to do with you) to waste their energy firing at you instead of making their own dreams come true.

Embrace the criticism. Don?t use it as an excuse not to do whatever it is you dream of doing.

Is Do the Work Worth Reading?
If you?re having a hard time getting started on that big thing you?re wanting to accomplish, Do the Work is like putting gasoline on the bonfire and handing you a match. It?s pure ?get out and do it? motivation with a lot of strong ideas mixed in there for getting it started.

The core truth of this book is very simple, though. You can?t succeed at anything if you don?t do the work, and there?s no better time than right now to get started.

Line Up In Pairs! Noah's Ark Amusement Park A Go!

noah-ark-theme-park.jpg

You know, we're pretty sure the country is still in a recession. How is it these people voted unanimously to have this thing built when there are people really struggling in this economy? It makes no kind of sense.

On Thursday, the Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority was granted approval to spend $40 million in tax rebates to build a biblical theme park called "The Ark Encounter." That's $40 MILLION to build a 70,00 square-foot "museum," complete with Noah's Ark and Gift Shop.

For months, sane people have been pleading with the board not to back Mike Zovath's, a co-founder of the Answers in Genesis ministry, controversial attraction, arguing the legitimacy of a religious attraction being funded by a state government. However, it seems their arguments have fallen on deaf ears as the entire Kentucky Tourism department voted for giving the large sum of money to the project, which coincidentally, will actually cost $172 million.

Gee, maybe you want to sucker some money out of the school boards next. Kids don't need to learn, right? Might as well funnel as much money into this loon idea as possible, right? RIGHT?!

Ridiculous!

For those of you who are really interested, the "park" will include the ark, a replica of the Tower of Babel, lecture halls, shops, theaters and, of course, a petting zoo.

Joy. Bliss. Rapture. (Hey, wasn't that supposed to happen today???)

Photos: Come High Water, Homemade Levees May Save The Day

According to our news blog, the flooding Mississippi River has crested lower than expected in Vicksburg, Miss., but the Army Corps of Engineers warns it will be days before the surging waters recede, The Associated Press reports.

The city had been preparing for days for the floodwaters to arrive; and before evacuating the area, some residents and farmers took matters into their own hands and built personal levees to protect their homes from floodwaters. Some of the levees rise as high as the roof, if not higher.

Individual households built their own levees to keep flood waters out.

These photos, taken by Getty photographer Scott Olson, were filed Wednesday. As of Thursday, some of the houses remained safe, though others had already been flooded. There are few photos from this area from today; time will gauge the success of these last-ditch efforts.

How unlikely would it be that a person in their late 20s would ...

How unlikely would it be that a person in their late 20s would have colorectal cancer? I seem to have symptomsI?ve been having some bothersome symptoms lately. I?m 29 years old. I was just reading about the death of Joel Siegel. He died of colorectal cancer. So as I was reading about it, I found out the symptoms of colorectal cancer & I have actually been having several of these symptoms for some time now. Since the birth of my daughter early this year. Would it be really unlikely that I would have colorectal cancer? Like I said I?m 29 years old. These are the symptoms I?m having:
- chronic constipation
- a little bit of rectal bleeding (this doesn?t happen every day tho)
- pain during and after having a bm
- unexplainable fatigue & feeling of weakness despite me getting a full 8 hours of sleep & sometimes I even get more
Those are the recurring symptoms I?ve been having. Do you think it could be colorectal cancer? I?m hoping it?s just hemorrhoids as I also read from an article on webmd that hemorrhoids can also cause bleeding in the digestive tract & since I had baby not long ago?
by the way here?s the link to the article about colorectal cancer. It contains a list of many of the symptoms caused by having colorectal cancer that I got off of webmd.

Snoopy
My grandmother had a colonoscopy due to colon cancer in her early 30?s. Please, see a doctor and get this checked out.

Good Luck!

Poppy
They could just be something because of your baby, but it won?t hurt to test. I would get a blood test immediately if I were you. It?s better to be safe than sorry.

Talk to your doctor about this.

My friend was diagnosed with leukemia not to long ago, and she?s only 11. It?s not impossible that you would have cancer.

God bless you and good luck!

hunafa armstrong aka rambo
those symptoms can be caused by a number of things. I would be wrong if i tell you it is unlikely for it to occur in you because of your age. you have both pros and cons saying yes you do and no you don?t. The best thing to do in this situation is to go to a doctor or your doctors to get a proper answer.

kathy_is_a_nurse
While colo-rectal cancer wouldn?t be my first guess, I certainly can?t rule it out. And whatever the problem might be, my recommendation would be the same?no big surprise here?go to a doctor, let him/her rule it out, and treat you accordingly for whatever the problem might be.

greydoc6
Unfortunately your young age is no guarantee that you do not have colorectal cancer. Is there a family history?

Bite the bullet and see a gastroenterologist. A colonoscopy is not that big of a deal (the prep or cleanout is no fun), and it is worth the peace of mind it could bring you. He/she may determine you don?t even need that, but rather some dietary modifications or treatment for hemorrhoids.

Don?t wait. Your daughter needs a healthy mom.

HockeyGirl
your symptoms sounds more like hemorroids and hormonal changes due to your pregnancy and delivery. but if you are worried, get it checked out

frogstories@att.net
Please don?t put off seeing your doctor.

Panda
Your symtoms could mean any number of things . . related or unrelated to each other. Cancer can happen at any age, so do not assume that because you are 29 years old you can?t get it. It is not as rare in young adults as some think . . why? Well, because in the majority of cases young adults do what you are doing . . wondering, but not quite believing that it could be cancer. So, they delay being checked by a doctor. By the time symptoms become acute . . it is too late because it is advanced cancer. Whenever you have any doubt in your mind you should go immediately to your doctor. Explain what is happening and ask to be referred to a gastroentrologist. You will probably have a colonoscopy which is just a procedure where the doctor can take a look inside the colon. If they find a polyp or tumor they ususally remove it right at that time and biopsy it. It will be worth it just for your peace of mind.

Other possibilities besides cancer include hemmoroids, Crohns Disease, and Ulcerative Colitis. Early colon cancer is highly treatable, it is only when you wait that it becomes deadly.

Make an appointment to see your doctor on Monday.

Good luck.

I am with everyone else. Please get checked out. I was diagnosed with stage iv colon cancer Jan 2006 at the age of 40. My symptoms were not much different then yours. I complained of chronic constipation since my late teens, had rectal bleeding and fatigue. I had a barium enema in 2001 and it missed my polyp/cancer. A colonoscopy is the best and only procedure I would recommend for screening. Do not let the doctor talk you out of it because of your age. I know many people with cc under the age of 40. CC is very treatable and preventable if caught early.

Colorectal cancer is not very common in someone in their 20?s, but it does happen. My suggestion is try a stool softener that has a mild laxative in it for a few days and see if it helps. But obviously you should see your doctor before you decide on anything.
