Get Your Game On at Board Game Island | blog.galveston.com

Board Game Island interiorIt?s hard to go anywhere without seeing someone playing on some electronic device, be it an adult on a phone, or a child on a Nintendo DS, or some other distraction. For all their modern marvels, the devices of today do little to stir the spontaneous camaraderie of a good old-fashioned board game.

Think about it. When was the last time you sat down with friends or family for a good game of Scrabble or Monopoly or Candyland or even a game of cards? Do you remember laughing until your stomach hurt? Yelling at your best friend for being better at a game than you? Being confident you knew it was Professor Plum in the dining room with the knife, only to find out it was Col. Mustard with the bat in the spa?

I remember playing games as a child with friends and with my parents. My father teaching me to play chess. Or my mom always getting challenged in Scrabble. Or endless hours of card games around the kitchen table. Even today, mom and I can play cards until we?re both about to fall asleep at the table.

There is just something about playing a game with a group of friends that makes for a perfect evening, even if you lose, badly. Great memories are made playing games, and now Galveston has a new place to help make more of those memories.

Board Game Island opened recently and is destined to be a favorite local hangout.

It combines food and beverage with a vast collection of games, some classic, some fresh from the developers (Blankety-Blank will make your head hurt at all the words you suddenly can?t remember), and an enthusiastic staff that might even join in a game when their shifts are over. It?s the kind of place you can spend hours and not realize how late it is on a school night (so good thing it?s opening in summer.)

The menu is small, but eclectic. There?s fresh-made chicken salad sandwiches, a jerk chicken that is a perfect blend of spicy and sweet, and fresh-baked brownies, cookies and cakes. If you don?t feel like a full meal, there are several snack items to choose from as well, because snacking and playing games just seem to go together.

The beverage choice ranges from tea and sodas, to Italian sodas, coffee, and even a small selection of beer and wine.

Jeremiah Wagstaff and Nick Hartnett opened the game caf? because they love games. And you can tell with their eagerness to explain any game on the shelf, help sell you on trying a new game and just generally chatting with customers as they?re battling wits. It?s obvious they are generally interested in making Board Game Island a place people want to visit, again and again.

Board Game Island would be the perfect place for a family to stop in on a ridiculously hot afternoon, or after dinner when you?re looking for something else to do because the kids aren?t ready to sleep.

It would be a great place for folks to meet for lunch and have a game of chess or Battleship or backgammon before heading back to work.

Need a fun first-date idea? Play a game with someone and quickly learn whether you?re really going to enjoy each other?s company when you?re getting beaten at Scrabble.

And if you play a game you really like, there is even a large selection of games available for purchase.

It is a great alternative to a bar for a place to gather and socialize with friends of any age, and it?s fun to watch as people walk in, play a round of cards or chess, socialize, compete and laugh, and then go back to whatever they were doing before they stepped through the doors.

But you can be assured that when they leave, they are happier and more relaxed after a little bit of play. Playing is good for the soul.

Something magical happens when you?re playing games. People come together. We walked in a party of four, but quickly found ourselves pulling tables together to accommodate an impromptu gathering of about 10 or so people for a round of Cards Against Humanity.

That?s what games do-they bring people together. And Board Game Island is a perfect place to make that happen.
