SAN ANTONIO -- It's the foul?that happened off the field that landed a UTSA?Roadrunner baseball player behind bars.
He is accused of rallying his teammates to beat up the competition.? But there were no innings and no peanuts at this one. Instead, authorities say 22-year-old Daniel Rockett recruited three of his teammates to show up?at the victim's apartment and beat him.
The incident happened in the 14300 block of?Babcock?on Sunday night.? The victim is a?UTSA?track athlete and says that he was possibly assaulted because he is dating Rockett's ex.
On Tuesday, UTSA Head Baseball coach Jason Marshall released the following statement:
"We are aware of the allegations made regarding one of our student-athletes.? We are currently reviewing the matter and will take whatever action is appropriate."
UTSA?baseball fans are shocked, but hope justice prevails.?
"Innocent til proven guilty,"?said Jessie Barner,?a student. "He needs to be run through the court system just like anybody else."
Other baseball teammates were not available to comment.? We?were told the team is at an away game. There is no word yet on if Rockett and the?other suspects will be?cut or?benched because of the incident.
Rockett was charged Sunday with burglary with intent to commit assault.?
