Is your crossover or SUV at risk for theft? A recent study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau has reviewed around five years of data to come up with the favorite vehicles targeted by thieves and which areas of the country are the hardest hit by car theft. While this knowledge might not save your ride, knowing if you are in a higher risk area with a top pick for theft, it might pay off to due some due diligence in locking up and keeping an eye on your vehicle.
For this study, the National Insurance Crime Bureau pulled records from January 1, 2008, to June 30, 2012 and filtered through to make sure crossovers and SUVS were included, particularly those manufactured in 2009, 2010 and 2011. This left them with 19,961 reports to research. Amazingly, four of the top five favorite to steal crossovers and SUV were from Detroit automakers. Apparently car thieves prefer American made too.
Top 5 Stolen SUVs and Crossovers:
- Ford Escape with 1,014 thefts
- Chevrolet Tahoe with 856 thefts
- Toyota RAV4 with 801 thefts
- Ford Edge with 739 thefts
- Dodge Journey with 721 thefts
States Reporting Most of Those Thefts:
- California with 3,003 thefts
- Texas with 1,826 thefts
- Florida with 1,784 thefts
- New York with 1,754 thefts
- Michigan with 1,367 thefts
It?s important to point out that while you can sometimes hope that your vehicle will be found, in at least almost as good of a condition as what it was taken in, you have to know you aren?t always going to be that lucky. Apparently some crossovers and SUVs are more notorious for never being recovered. Here?s the rundown:
- Toyota Highlander with 29.9% unrecovered
- Jeep Wrangler with 28.6% unrecovered
- Cadillac Escalade with 23.5% unrecovered
- Nissan Murano with 19.2% unrecovered
- Lexus RX with 18.7% unrecovered
