Woodville event touts wellness | Enlightenment through The Power ...

WOODVILLE ? Wellness of the mind, body and spirit was the focus of the Health, Beauty and Fitness Fair on Saturday at Woodmore Elementary School.

The event, now in its second year, was sponsored by the Woodville Business and Community Association and featured 15 vendors offering information about their products and services. Speakers also offered participatory demonstrations on fire safety, yoga, senior living, eye disease, stress management and prescription drug abuse.

Beth Thorbahn of PEAK Physical Therapy, one of the event?s organizers, said the fair offers local residents information about what services are available in the community, and gives local entrepreneurs a chance to connect with potential patrons.

?The businesses in town are trying to do a community service,? Thorbahn said. ?This way we can meet people before they walk through the business? door.?

Woodville Chiropractor Lon Nitschke and daughter and clinical counselor, Nichole Nitschke, offered information about their local health care business, Natural Health Center, and its holistic approach to healing.

The elder Nitschke offered attendees a free diagnosis, using bio-feedback devices and muscle testing, in an attempt to find any nutritional deficiencies or toxic elements in the body.

Terri Kruse, an optician at Woodville Family Eye Care, said she has been battling bronchitis and felt much better after spending only a short time with the chiropractor.

?I only spent five minutes with him and I feel great,? Kruse said.

Nichole Nitschke said she offers patients counseling, hypnosis and other treatments to address mental health, which she said is closely linked to someone?s physical health.

?We believe there is a mind-body connection,? Nitschke said. ?We have a balanced approach.?

She said the fair gives them a chance to reach out to the community and make residents aware of what their business can offer.

?I think it?s a great idea,? Nitschke said.

A presentation on what senior citizens can do with their ?bonus years? was given by Jessica Derkis, marketing and sales director for Otterbein Portage Valley Senior Lifestyle Community in Pemberville. Derkis said residents at Portage Village enjoy the arts, participate in volunteer organizations, seek educational opportunities and spend time writing and sharing their stories with friends and family.

?You have the time to do what you can?t do in your 30s and 40s,? she said.

Saturday?s fair, Derkis said, gave her businesses an invaluable chance to connect with the local senior citizen community.

Amy Stonerock, owner of His and Hers Hair Studio in the village, said she enjoyed the chance to meet potential customers and fellow business owners at the event.

?It?s a nice way to meet the other businesses in town,? Stonerock said.

She said the downturn in the economy has forced people to shop locally in an effort to save gas money, and events like Saturday?s can help businesses network with each other and people in the community.

?If these small towns are going to stay alive, people need to shop their businesses,? Stonerock said.

Dustin Cashen, 22, of Genoa, was decked out in full martial arts attire during the fair, answering questions about local business Taylor?s Tae Kwon Do and Tumbling. Cashen said has been practicing tae kwon do since he was seven.

Practice of the discipline, and the mentorship of proprietor and senior master James Taylor, has given him strength inside and out, he said.

?I?ve gained so much confidence in myself,? Cashen said. ?It?s changed me a lot.?

Woodville Fire Department members also were in attendance, giving a presentation on fire safety and showing off the new fire truck, Rescue 1.

Business owners and organizers Saturday said they were happy with a higher turnout than last year and hope it will continue for years to come.
