SUV pull, anyone? Canadians abroad find different ways to celebrate Canada Day:

TORONTO - Conducting counter-terrorism and marine security operations on open waters thousands of kilometres from home won't stop those on board the HMCS Charlottetown from celebrating Canada Day.

From troops in the Middle East to musicians in England, Canadians abroad are going the extra mile to feel close to home on the nation's birthday.

Canadian Forces members overseas said the holiday makes them feel a bit more homesick than usual, but they take solace in the fact that they are in the company of other Canadians.

"It eases some of the homesickness...but there really is nothing like being home in Ottawa for Canada Day," Sub-Lt. Marsalie Mackenzie said from onboard the HMCS Charlottetown frigate in the Arabian Sea.

"There is some solidarity here with everybody being Canadian, and obviously with the job we do there is that sense of pride."

Mackenzie usually spends Canada Day watching her father play in the Air Force band on Parliament Hill. This year, she and 250 other sailors onboard the HMCS Charlottetown will cap off their patrols by marking July 1 at sea.

"To celebrate we're going to have a flight deck barbecue and the heads of our departments are going to be serving up some hamburgers, french fries and a flight deck movie," she said.

Meanwhile, the 150 Canadian Forces stationed at Camp Phoenix in Kabul have some interesting activities planned ? including an armoured-SUV rope-pull.

"We're on a camp with another 3,000 troops from different countries, so we're showing our Canadian spirit to everybody here," master warrant officer Bruno Cyr said from Kabul, adding that troops will also be given a couple of cold beers.

"We haven't drank any beer for four months, so it will be nice to have two good Canadian beers."

Across the pond, a Canada Day celebration in London's Trafalgar Square is bringing together some top Canadian musicians and thousands of expatriates living in England.

Jeremy Taggart, drummer for Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace, says it's not the first time the group is on tour on Canada Day, but it doesn't stop them from celebrating.

"I think we'll just appreciate Canada Day in London with the thousands of others leading the charge," he said. "It makes you feel great because it's a little slice of how things are at home."

Jacob Hoggard, the front man for Canadian rockers Hedley, said it will be the band's first time performing in London and they will bring a lot of Canadian pride to the stage.

"We're looking forward to it a lot, it's going to be really fun to be playing for a lot of fellow Canadians," he said from Montreal.

Hoggard added that if he wasn't performing in London, he would be attending a friend's Canada Day house-demolishing party in Montreal.

"I would've been there with my chainsaw cutting down holes in his wall."

Halifax-based indie rocker Rich Aucoin said the London concert will be much more interesting than his usual Canada Day plans of barbecuing with friends.

"This is probably going to be the biggest Canada Day celebration of my life funnily enough, even though it's going to take place outside of Canada," he said.

"I feel like being surrounded by a few thousand other Canadians will make it ironically more Canadian than me being on somebody's back deck with a handful of people."

Twitter and LinkedIn call it quits

After several years of partnering with each other, Twitter and LinkedIn have decided to part ways.? Their partnership began in 2009, but even a long term relationship such as theirs was not strong enough to keep them together.

LinkedIn suffered a huge blow recently when over 6 million users had their password stolen, and this could possibly be one of the reasons why Twitter decided to distant itself from LinkedIn.? Furthermore, a $5 million lawsuit came about when users said that LinkedIn?s security policy had contradictions that did not abide to industry standards.

Secondly, Twitter has amassed such a huge following that it simply doesn?t need or want to share its potential ad revenues with LinkedIn.? Users can post a Tweet directly from LinkedIn, but they can no longer directly share their post to LinkedIn from their Twitter account.

The split could be mutual in every respect, but LinkedIn?s recent security breach suggests that it will take some time for LinkedIn to restore its reputation.?

Ergonomics Myth #1: Ergonomics is Too Expensive ? ergodvd

Many business owners tend to think that ergonomics is too expensive to consider implementing. ?They also believe that since the economy is in bad shape, that they simply can?t afford it. ?In fact, the complete opposite is true. ?In an economic downturn, that is the most OPPORTUNE MOMENT to implement a new ergonomics strategy to help reduce labor costs. ?Why? Well simply put, you are hiring fewer workers to perform the same tasks as before, therefore you need those workers to perform at their best, and to be protected from potential musculoskeletal injury due to poor ergonomics. ?Still not convinced? Here are some other facts regarding workplace safety. (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

  • 37% of all work related injuries are caused by poor ergonomic conditions
  • The average work related injury caused by poor ergonomics easily totals $100,000 in lost time, disability ratings, compensation and potential litigation.
  • Workers who suffer a musculoskeletal disorder lose up to 19 days of work on average.
  • Musculoskeletal disorders are a major national problem costing the US economy more than $50 billion dollars a year.

Whether you are operating in good or poor economic conditions, you need your employees to stay healthy and safe from injury. ? The ergonomic consultants at Peak Ergonomics?can help your company with this process. ?In fact, one of their clients has reported a 92% decrease in their OSHA recordables as a result of using healthy work solutions from Peak Ergonomics.

Not only will your company benefit from the cost savings, there is also an economic benefit as well. ?In fact, on average, companies will receive $3 or more for every $1 they spend on improving their office ergonomics and workplace safety. For more specific examples, the following table details some specific ergonomic interventions made by certain companies and the productivity and profit increases they achieved as a result.

Company

Intervention

Result

Applied Materials (Supplier to the silicon chip industry) Properly designed and tested casters for manually moving 7,000 lb. clean room manufacturing equipment 400% increase in productivity, in terms of man hours, reduced potential for work injury claims
Applied Materials (supplier to the silicon chip industry) Researched and selected a better torque hand driver tool 50% increase in product output
Telecommunications Plant Ergonomic redesign of four workstations Increased production, reduced data entry error rates and improved job satisfaction
Fast Food Provider Redesign of Workstation A 20% increase in productivity
Steel Company Ergonomic redesign of an observation pit Saved over $150, 000 in one year through reduced waste and higher productivity
Toy Manufacturing Plant Product Design Change A savings of $0.11 per part

(Source: Versatables)

In conclusion, when considering the cost of an ergonomics consultation for your business, the situation must be viewed in light of the positive health and safety benefits of ergonomics on productivity and the cost savings from fewer workplace injury claims. With this in mind, it becomes quite clear that you cannot afford to continue with the status quo. ?Call Peak Ergonomics today at 573-239-3666 or contact us via email.

China Clarifies Pre-Tax Deduction Policies for Advertising and ...

China?s Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the State Administration of Taxation (SAT) jointly released the ?Circular Regarding Pre-tax Deduction Policies on Advertising and Business Promotion Expenses (caishui [2012] No.28, hereinafter referred to as ?Circular?)?on May 30, which is retroactively effective from January 1, 2011 and will remain in effect through December 31, 2015. The purpose of the Circular is to address the dilemma faced by enterprises which incur significant annual advertising and promotional expenses in certain industries, but cannot deduct such expenses in excess of 15 percent of the sales revenue of the current year (according to Article 44 of Regulations on the Implementation of Enterprise Income Tax Law of the People?s Republic of China).

According to the Circular, enterprises engaged in the manufacturing and sale of cosmetics, manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, and the manufacturing of beverages (excluding enterprises producing alcoholic drinks) are eligible to deduct advertising and promotional fees which are less than 30 percent of the sales (business) incomes of the current year. The excess amounts can be carried forward to future years for deduction.
Where the affiliated enterprises have entered into advertising and business promotion expense sharing agreements (hereinafter referred to as ?sharing agreements?), the advertising and business promotion expenses incurred by one party that do not exceed the pre-tax deduction limit of sales (business) revenue of the current year can be deducted from the taxable income of the said party. Alternatively, part or all of such expenses may be accumulated to the other party for deduction in accordance with the sharing agreement. When calculating the deductible advertising and business promotion expenses of the other party, the other party may exclude the advertising and business promotion expenses accumulated thereto according to the aforesaid measure.
It is anticipated that manufacturers of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and beverages will benefit from this Circular in the following tax years through to 2015.

?Organizations of all kinds are developing apps, but for many the way?these apps are built is inefficient and unsustainable,? said Ashley?Streb, vice president of technology at Brightcove. ?Hybrid apps, or apps?built using HTML5 but deployed as a native app, continue to change the?game for app development. • The App Cloud Workshop testing tool?that enables developers to?painlessly preview and beta test apps directly on a device just as if?they were testing a Web application in a browser.
  • On-device debugging?to test application code while it is?running on a device. By simply shaking their device, developers can?connect the App Cloud Workshop test environment to the App Cloud?remote debugging console to quickly diagnose problems and resolve bugs?or performance problems.
  • Open access to Internet content sources, including content?management systems, blogs, and REST-based Web services and limited use?of App Cloud?s Fast Feeds content optimization service for up to 5 of?those sources.

Mayor Brown signs economic development legislation

Mayor Alvin Brown signing the economic development legislation Thursday morning.

Mayor Alvin Brown on Thursday signed into law the first part of his economic development legislation that Jacksonville City Council approved Tuesday.

?This represents plans for Jacksonville?s future,? Brown said at a news conference in his office.

This part of the economic development legislation abolishes the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission and establishes the city?s Office of Economic Development. Current JEDC employees will be folded into the Office of Economic Development.

Economic development and business growth were key parts of Brown?s campaign. He said he and his transition team started overhauling the city's economic development process as soon as he took office on July 1, 2011.

?Doing it all within a year says a lot,? Brown said.

He unveiled the economic development legislation in March.

The next step, Brown said, will be focusing on the creation of the Downtown Investment Authority. He said there is ?great momentum? Downtown, citing the 1,500 employees EverBank Financial Corp.?

He said he?d be meeting with city council members in the next few weeks to discuss the DIA. The legislation that creates the DIA is in committee.

When asked how long it would be before the DIA was formed, Brown said, ?We?ll see,? citing the meetings and the legislative process.

Free Pets to Good Home ? Blog Archive ? Shouldn't Your Horse ...

At one time, you could enter a trade only by reason of an apprenticeship. If you wanted to become a farrier, you got yourself apprenticed to some famous farrier close by. Only 1 or 2 or the well established farriers would condescend to taking on apprentices, and they might make their apprentices work like plentiful machines. Apprenticeships didn?t give you the benefit of announcing bye bye in a few months; after you were in, you were in for nothing but 3 yeas or much more. The delicacies required in the business of working with the feet of horses are mastered neither swiftly nor easily. Being a good farrier takes plenty of application and talent, and demands that the farrier has extensive knowledge of the horse?s body structure and most especially its feet structure, The farrier must be familiar with the physics of equine movement, a horse?s musculature and its skeletal system. A farrier needs to be a walking encyclopedia on all matters applying to the horse?s feet. She should be able to identify a problem correctly with any horse?s foot in a in seconds and set about implementing a solution also in a jiffy. The able farrier knows what can be healed and what can?t, and he can submit ideas to the pony owner about what to do to salvage the situation.

Unfortunately, not all farriers are encyclopedia-like, and there?s actually no formal education or training course for farriers, at least in the States. The English system of farriers is a bit more structured.

It?s not easy to find the ideal farrier. There are farriers by the dozens and the hundreds, but not all of them have a high level of experience. Many of them don?t, as a verifiable fact.

The arena of farriers is divided into two warring groups, which often snarl and growl at each other. One bunch of farriers thinks that shoes should get banned, and horses should be allowed to live and function in unshod feet. If god made them that way, who are we homo sapiens to go against god?s will?

Simply because we put shoes on our feet doesn?t mean we do so with horses also. We also forget that we buckle or lace or velcro our shoes firmly onto our feet, but we use nails to shod horses. I have heard many a horse shoe adversary ask a horse shoe advocate how he, the supporter, would like it if someone nailed shoes onto his feet. And I?ve heard the pony shoe supporter retort by asking how the adversary would like to run around gravel and hard surfaces and melting asphalt with no shoes on.

My experience tells me that shoes are good for horses, but they impose on the horse owner the responsibility of taking awfully close care of his horse?s feet.

Manmohan Singh may hold Finance Ministry after Pranab ...

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is a distinguished economist himself, is likely to hold charge of Finance Ministry after Pranab Mukherjee's resignation. Sources say that Manmohan Singh is seen as the best person to oversee the revival of the economy, which is facing a tough time with high inflation and poor GDP growth on one side and the global crisis on the other.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, too, is not keen on bringing in a outsider as the next finance minister of India because of the poor state of the economy. Government sources say a team of senior bureaucrats are likely to assist Manmohan Singh.

Other senior ministers in the Union Cabinet are not seen as keen on taking over as the finance minister. With the Indian economy facing tough challenges both on the domestic as well as foreign fronts, the government and the Congress party are keen on an expert becoming the Finance Minister.

The economy is facing a tough time with high inflation and poor GDP growth on one side and the global crisis on the other.

Manmohan Singh may hold Finance Ministry after Pranab Mukherjee

Following the Vodafone tax issue and the 2G spectrum allocation scam, foreign investors are skeptical about investing in India. But with Manmohan at the helm of the Finance Ministry the investors can be reassured that India is still a safe bet as the Prime Minister is seen as liberal and pro-reforms. The Indian economy was liberalised during his tenure as the Finance Minister in the early 1990s and he has a lot of goodwill as far a economic matters are concerned.

Home Minister P Chidambaram, who has handled the finance portfolio, has been accused by the Opposition of not doing enough to stop the 2G spectrum allocation scam and the Congress leadership is unlikely to put him in charge of the crucial ministry. He is also facing a case in connection with his election to the Lok Sabha and the party feels that if he is made the Finance Minister, there could be needless controversy and embarrassment.

The Opposition has been targeting the government for the slowing down of economy and accused it of not taking enough steps in tackling rising inflation, poor industrial production and agricultural growth.

After Pranab Mukherjee resigns from the Lok Sabha to contest the presidential election, the Congress will also have to look for a new Leader of the Lok Sabha, a position that Mukherjee handled with aplomb.

Mukherjee's last day in office on Monday as Finance Minister saw the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) hiking the limit of external commercial debt by $10 billion. Moreover, the regulator also increased the limit of overseas investment in government bonds by $5 billion to $20 billion.

In a bid to boost dollar inflow, the Finance Ministry is examining withholding the liberalisation for bonds and the withholding tax, too, is likely to be liberalised as announced in the Union Budget presented by Mukherjee.

Analysts say these measures are aimed at halting the rupee's slide and increasing the inflow of the dollar

?I would not judge the measures by what the market does in any one day but i think the prime ministers also said that you know we're going to do a number of things and I think this is a very unsettled time for markets anywhere,? said Planning Commission Deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister C Rangarajan said that the RBI measures would take care of only the Rupee. ?The measures announced today will take care of only one problem that is Rupee. These are single focus and economic policy is a continuing process. The correction will happen over time when capital will start flowing in,? said Rangarajan.

But the markets did not respond enthusiastically to his parting gift as the BSE benchmark shed 249 points from day's high of 17,131.15, before closing at 16,882.16, down 90.35 points due to fall in banks, technology, auto and capital goods stocks. The NSE benchmark fell 31.40 points or 0.61 per cent to 5,114.65.

Even the Indian rupee came off the day's high that was trading at 56.95, a rise of just 17 paise after hitting an intraday low of 56.42 a dollar.

Christie's launches online auctions with wine sale | Google Drive

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Christie?s, the global auction house, said on Monday that it is launching a series of online sales for global collectors that will run in parallel with its traditional sales.

The online auctions, beginning with the sale of rare and fine wines, follow the successful online component of The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor, which totaled $9.5 million and an online charity auction of Hermes handbags that fetched $229,000.

?The success of these two pilots demonstrates our clients around the world are eagerly embracing online-only sales as a regular addition to Christie?s calendar of traditional live auctions,? Steven P. Murphy, chief executive officer, Christie?s International, said in a statement.

The global online-exclusive wine sale will include ?82 Lafite and Latour, magnums of fine Champagne, beautifully aged Port, and hard-to-source California cult wines from Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle, the 246-year-old auction house said.

The 301 lots are estimated to sell for a total of more than $750,000. Estimates for individual lots range from $200 to $35,000.

?As a collecting category, wine lends itself very well to a global, online-only auction platform,? said Scott Torrence, vice president and senior wine specialist. ?As a way of doing business, online-only sales are a very natural progression that provides our clients with even more opportunities to build and broaden their collections of fine and rare wines.?

Online bidding for the wines, which can be viewed in an e-catalogue, begins on August 6 and closes two weeks later.

(AP) ? An Egyptian court suspended on Tuesday a government decision allowing military police and intelligence to arrest civilians, a setback for the country's military rulers after the decree drew an outcry from opponents who accused them of trying to impose martial law.

The Justice Ministry issued a decree on July 13 that allowed military police and intelligence agents to arrest civilians for even minor offenses such as traffic violations. Rights activists feared the new powers essentially reproduced the country's hated emergency law, which had expired just two weeks earlier after more than 30 years in force. The emergency law granted broad powers of arrest and detention to police that were abused over the years and fed the popular anger that led to last year's uprising.

Critics said the new powers of detention could extend the rule of the generals, even if they transfer power to the elected president by the end of this month as promised.

Military officials said at the time that the new powers were only meant to fill a security vacuum resulting from the uprising when the police force collapsed and disappeared from the streets during the first days of mass protests.

The government, which was appointed by the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), can appeal the court decision.

The military has pledged to turn power over to a civilian government once a new president is named. On Sunday, Islamist Mohammed Morsi of the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood was declared Egypt's first freely elected president in modern history.

However Morsi is facing a power struggle with the military rulers after they stripped the presidency of its major powers one week before the winner of the election was announced.

The ruling military council has used court decrees and constitutional declarations to stop Islamists from controlling all the executive and legislative branches.

The same court postponed a key decision on overturning the ruling military council's order to disband the Islamist-dominated parliament.

The Muslim Brotherhood and another Islamist group, the ultraconservative Salafis, won more than 70 percent of parliament in a free election around the start of the year. The parliament, according to Egypt's interim constitution, is tasked with forming a panel to write the constitution. Twice, liberals walked away from panels formed by the Islamist-controlled parliament, saying the panels are packed with Islamists and voicing fears that Egypt's new constitution would end up more Islamic.

However, two days before the June 16-17 presidential runoff, the ruling council dissolved parliament after a court determined that the parliamentary elections were illegal. As polls closed on June 17, the SCAF issued a declaration of constitutional amendments that gave the ruling military legislative power and control over the process of drafting the constitution.

They also declared a new body, The National Defense Council, dominated by generals with a wide mandate to decide security, military and foreign affairs.

On Tuesday, attempts to reverse some of the military council's decrees were stalled after the Cairo Administrative Court postponed a ruling to July 7 on the legality of dissolving the 498-member parliament.

The case was brought by lawmakers.

In the absence of a parliament, Morsi must take his oath of office before the Constitutional Court, which was behind the ruling that recommended dissolving the Brotherhood-led parliament.

If Morsi takes the oath in front of the court, it will undermine him in the eyes of many, especially those who staged a sit-in for a week in Cairo's Tahrir Square against the military's power grab.

Morsi, according to his spokesman Yasser Ali, has been meeting with legal and constitutional experts to try to resolve the swearing in dilemma.

Also on Tuesday, the same court postponed to Sept. 1 an appeal that sought to disband a 100-member panel appointed by parliament to draft a new constitution. That left the panel and the constitution drafting process in limbo.

For Sale By Owner - The Process of Selling Your Home Yourself

Sell your home yourself and obtain full selling price and pay no charges. Selling real estate quick hasn't been an easy job. Selling your home right to the buyer provides you with much more advantages. Because there could be no presence of a realtor who may have other interests in your mind. Individuals thinking about purchasing a house would benefit largely with fsbo purchases. Selling your home by using a property buying company is a little known technique that everybody is using to sell homes quick in the current market. Sellers have bombarded the property market because of the present economic turmoil. Selling your property the fsbo way can be quite attractive since you pay simply no commissions and possess total treatments for your sale. Selling a house through the for sale by owner style is usually debated within the real estate community. We definitely don't blame you for trying to sell your home yourself, instead of using the help of an agent.

Any amendments or supplements to buy contracts should be written around the standard addenda. These forms offer most frequent amendments and changes to buy contracts. Because of this you'll have limited exposure to qualified buyers. If your seller promotes a house like a fsbo, and a buyer who is not dealing with a real estate agent wishes to get your home, the seller pays absolutely no commission because virtually no realtors play in the process. To be able to simplify the owner finance scenario, you ought to have a potential investor prepared for the freshly developed income. These kind of homes can be found on for sale by owner listings that are available on the internet. While a for sale by owner purchase can eliminate the presence of the real estate agent in the deal, it will bring on a lot more responsibilities and dangers for buyer and seller.

Aspen homes for sale

Consumers of for sale by owner houses can meet online, with useful resources directories for lawyers, appraisers, home loan and home remodeling companies. These types of sites area websites that can help you receive serious buyers. You'll find houses or market and sell your very own for sale by owner property. You may also bargain using the seller to get a cheaper closing price, that is if you if did your homework around the house.

Selling a house is not really that simple. Selling real estate by yourself also needs plenty of work, from forms to marketing to showing possible buyers the home. Selling real estate fsbo puts sellers in a hard position. Due to the responsibilities normally handled by the realtor has become at the disposal of the vendor. Selling real estate requires an in-depth and thorough understanding of the housing market. You need to be aware of such things as how to locate the very best motivated buyers, and many other steps that result in a successful sale. Selling a property is as significant as purchasing one. I purchase properties constantly and one good thing about supplying a trader is that you can stay in the home right until your new rentals are prepared to move into. Should you ever consider selling your house keep in mind to give a trader a call.

Islamists hail Morsy's Egypt victory, West cautious

LONDON (Reuters) - Islamists around the world hailed Mohamed Morsy's election as Egypt's first freely chosen president as a victory for their cause on Sunday while the West, Gulf states and Israel reacted with caution, wary of his political agenda.

Closely watched from Gaza to the Gulf, the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate's win over former army general Ahmed Shafik was widely seen as an historic event with far-reaching consequences beyond Egypt's borders.

"The Egyptian nation did not elect a president just for Egypt, but for the Arab and Islamic nations too," said Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas in Gaza.

Viewing the victory through the prism of the Arab Spring uprisings that toppled leaders in Tunisia, Libya, and Yemen as well as Egypt, Islamists said they saw Morsy's win as proof their "revolution" was on the march.

"Mohamed Morsy a president for Egypt, thank God," said Mohammed al-Qahtani, a co-founder of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), a group pushing for democracy in the Gulf state.

"This is a victory for the Arab revolutions," he said in a post on social networking site Twitter.

The United States, which provides vast military aid to Egypt, welcomed the result but made it clear it expected Morsy to ensure stability and not to veer to extremes.

"We believe that it is important for President-elect Morsy to take steps at this historic time to advance national unity by reaching out to all parties and constituencies in consultations about the formation of a new government," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement, calling on the new leader to ensure Egypt remains "a pillar of regional peace".

Iran, which prides itself on its own Islamist credentials, paid fulsome tribute to those it called "the martyrs of the (Egyptian) revolution", whom it said were responsible for ushering in "a splendid vision of democracy."

"The revolutionary movement of the Egyptian people... is in its final phases of a new era of developments in the Middle East and the Islamic Awakening," the foreign ministry said.

In Saudi Arabia, the world's number one oil producer, the government was silent. It has had poor relations with the Muslim Brotherhood, with many of the kingdom's officials accusing it of backing demands for internal political change.

However, analysts said Saudi Arabia would have to work with the new Egyptian president.

"I think (the Saudis) are going to be very practical about it. More and more they will discover common interests in the economy, in politics, on how to deal with Iran," said Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent former newspaper editor with ties to the ruling family.

"BUILD BRIDGES"

In Britain, William Hague, the foreign minister, also gave a muted welcome to Morsy's victory.

"It will be important for the new government to stand for national unity and reconciliation, to build bridges across Egyptian society and to uphold human rights, including the rights of women and religious minorities, and the rule of law," Hague said in a statement.

France issued a similar statement. "It is key today that the transition, which started in February 2011, continues so that a democratic and pluralist political system establishes itself in Egypt, guaranteeing civil liberties and political freedom to all citizens," the office of President Francois Hollande said.

Israel voiced respect for Morsy's victory and the "democratic process", but called on the new administration in Cairo to maintain the peace accord maintained by Egypt's ousted leader Hosni Mubarak for 33 years.

Across the Gulf, reaction was cautious.

In the United Arab Emirates, the WAM news agency said the government respected "the choice of the Egyptian people in the context of its democratic march".

However, Dahi Khalfan, the Dubai police chief, was more skeptical. "An unfortunate choice," he said in a tweet. "The repercussions of this choice will not be light to poor ordinary people."

Bahrain's state news agency said King Hamad congratulated Morsy, praising "an atmosphere of freedom and democracy".

In Iraq, Ali al-Moussawi, an aide to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, said the government welcomed the win as "a major step in the right direction to boost democracy in Egypt".

A senior Western diplomat in Cairo made it clear the West was trying to put a brave face on Morsy's win and was keen to stress the nature of the election that brought him to power.

"Egypt has a civilian, democratically elected president for the first time in its history," the diplomat said.

"An imperfect presidency is way better than none at all," he said, urging the Brotherhood not to provoke the army, which has curbed presidential powers, into limiting them anymore.

STREET REACTION

Many Egyptians living abroad expressed relief, saying they felt their homeland finally had a chance to flourish.

In Riyadh, Abdulhamid Saraya, 60, an expatriate Egyptian engineer, said Morsy's win was a watershed.

"I am happy we are ending 30 years of injustice. (Ahmed) Shafik's loss is an end to a dark age that forced us to leave the country and live abroad most of our lives to escape injustice and poor living conditions," he told Reuters.

Muslims elsewhere said they were also pleased with the result, but some had advice for the new president.

In Algeria, Atef Kedadra, a senior journalist on the country's El Khabar daily newspaper told Reuters Morsy's victory carried tremendous symbolic importance but he would now have to show he was inclusive. "If he appoints only Islamists, he will lose because the Islamists are not used to ruling a country."

In Abu Dhabi, a 37-year-old government employee who gave his name as Seif, was upbeat. "I am sure Egypt has a bright future. The Brothers are forced to keep up with modernity, progress and openness. They don't want to destroy or harm their country."

Catherine al-Talli, a prominent Syrian human rights lawyer, said events in Egypt were likely to encourage the opposition battling President Bashar al-Assad.

"It shows that the popular will brings about democratic change, and that when the people chose to rise against repression they can defeat it," she said.

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Laya, a woman who goes to Cairo frequently, said she was concerned about how Morsy's victory would change the way women were treated.

"They will think it's now okay to approach girls and reprimand them for the way they dress," she told Reuters.

Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled ?Greece economic woes deepen as tax receipts nosedive? was written by Phillip Inman, economics correspondent, for guardian.co.uk on Monday 25th June 2012 13.20 UTC

Greece is struggling to cope with a collapse in corporate tax receipts, according to the latest figures from the Greek finance ministry.

The steep fall in corporation tax income ? from ?737m (?590m) between January and May 2011 to ?448m in the same period this year ? is likely to weigh heavily on the new coalition government as it prepares for a European summit later this week.

Without the ability to tax company profits, the government will be forced to step up its demands on households for tax income at a time when most families are already suffering cuts in wages and falling living standards.

The figures will also undermine the message from Greek leaders that the new government is capable of arresting the country?s decline and paying the interest on a new tranche of debt funding from Brussels.

Overall, government income declined by ?1bn, from last year?s ?19.9bn to ?18.9bn. Receipts from personal income taxes rose slightly, but were unable to offset the collapse in corporate receipts and falls in property taxes and ?other direct taxes?, which fell to ?816m from last year?s ?1.4bn.

VAT and other indirect tax revenues also fell heavily between the first five months of last year and the first five months of 2012,

Only a massive funding boost from EU funds kept the total state budget revenues from declining after a rise from ?673m to ?1.5bn.

The German finance minister, Wolfgang Scha?ble, who repeated his warning that Greece must live within its means, is unlikely to look kindly at other elements of the Athens budget statement, which shows that agriculture subsidies are up along with social security payments, especially state pension contributions, offsetting cuts in funding for social projects.

Plans to claw back indirect tax arrears appear to be succeeding after payments increased by two thirds to ?246m, but arrears payments from corporate and personal taxes declined, showing the government has an uphill struggle to tackle widespread tax evasion and avoidance.

Can Acer’s Iconia Tab A700 Outwit Apple and the New iPad?

The Acer Iconia Tab A700, with a 10.1in full HD 1080p display, was unveiled in June and comes with a suggested retail price of $450 (approximately ?290). The tablet comes in two colours - silver and black - and is the second of the company's products to be equipped with Nvidia's quad-core processor. In addition, it runs the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It features a high-resolution display and Dolby Mobile 3 with 5.1 Channel Dolby Surround Sound capabilities. In addition, users can share video on other monitors via the tablet's built-in micro HDMI port.

"Customers have embraced their tablets as a mobile hub for their daily lives, and the full HD display on the Acer A700 will give customers a fresh new respective on the apps, games and digital media they enjoy. Customers looking for a no-compromise tablet will get the features and performance they want in A700," said Paul Tayler, Director of Product Marketing for Connected Devices, Acer America.

Check out how Acer's tablet does against what must surely be the benchmark in this field, the new Apple iPad (two models - Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular), which was unveiled in March...

Display

The Acer Iconia Tab A700 features a 10.1in HD 1080p LED backlit display with a resolution of 1200 x 1920 pixels. It is believed to be capable of delivering 55 percent higher pixel density, compared to 800 x 1200 displays. The display has a 16:10 ratio and provides 178-degree viewing angles. ?

Follow us

The new iPad has a slightly smaller (9.7in) LED-backlit multi-touch, high-resolution Retina Display screen with In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology. The resolution is 1536 x 2048 pixels with a pixel density of 264 pixels per inch. The display features fingerprint-resistance oleophobic coating and supports multiple languages.

The Retina Display is one of the key features of the new iPad and a primary selling point. An analysis by AnandTech suggests the new iPad beats the ASUS Transformer Prime, the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro for display capabilities.

Acer, on the other hand, boasts the Tab A700's display as a 10-point touch capacitive screen which delivers a remarkable degree of accuracy and responsiveness. A review by CNET states the Tab A700 is the first Android tablet to offer resolutions of 1200 x 1920; we should add this is still smaller than the new iPad. ??????

Dimensions

The Tab A700 measures 10.2 x 6.9 x 0.43 inches and weighs 665g. In terms of design, Acer's is similar to the Tab A510?unveiled?in March but the A700 tablet weighs less. ?????

Both new iPad models measure 9.5 x 7.31 x 0.37 inches but the Wi-Fi model weighs 10g less than the other's 662g. both, incidentally, are heavier than the iPad 2. Indeed, they weigh more than even other tablets like the ASUS EeePad Transformer Prime (568g) and Toshiba AT200 (558g),?according?to a review by Trusted Reviews.?

Operating System

The Iconia Tab A700 runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS)), while the new iPad runs, obviously, Apple's iOS - v5.1. Apple's recently announced iOS 6 is expected to be made available to the new iPad sometime this fall.

Deadly Israel Raid on Gaza Deals Blow to Truce Efforts

An Israeli air strike on Gaza killed one Palestinian and wounded two on Saturday, medics said, in a blow to Egyptian-brokered efforts to restore an informal truce.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Israeli military of the latest raid which followed several on the territory during the night that drew retaliatory rocket fire into Israel.

The casualties came in a strike east of the city of Khan Yunis, in the south of the Gaza Strip, Palestinian sources said.

Overnight raids targeted two camps of the armed wing of Gaza's Hamas rulers in the center and north of the territory, and a former Hamas security post in Gaza City. They wounded about 20 people, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

Palestinian struck back, firing at least 23 rockets into southern Israel, most of them hitting the town of Sderot close to the Gaza border, Israeli officials told AFP, adding that one man was wounded.

An Israeli army statement said the latest raids were in response to rocket fire earlier in the week.

Israel held Hamas responsible for "all terrorist activity coming from the Gaza Strip," the army statement added.

On Friday, medics in the Gaza Strip reported that two Palestinians had been killed and four wounded when Israeli warplanes struck twice.

A first Israeli air strike on Friday afternoon targeted the east of Al-Bureij in the central part of the Gaza Strip, killing Basel Ahmad, 29, who was of no known affiliation, medical sources said.

Two other Palestinians were wounded in the strike, one of them seriously, the sources added.

Israeli aircraft "targeted a terrorist squad during preparations to fire a rocket at Israel from the central Gaza Strip. A hit was identified," the military said in a statement.

A second Israel air strike killed another Palestinian in the north of Gaza.

Hammam Abou Qadous, 20, died of his wounds after being hit as he travelled on his motorbike in northern Gaza on Friday evening, medical sources said.

Two other Palestinians were slightly injured, they added.

An army statement said "a plane of the Israel Air Force targeted a terrorist group in northern Gaza just after the group launched a rocket that hit the Ashkelon region".

An army spokeswoman said that five of the 23 rockets fired into Israel on Saturday were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.

"Eighteen rockets exploded this morning in southern Israel, 16 of them in the town of Sderot," the spokeswoman said.

A police spokesman said one Israeli was wounded when a rocket hit a building in Sderot.

The violence came despite a tenuous Egyptian-brokered truce between Israel and Hamas. It was announced late on Wednesday by the Islamists' Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades military wing after a flurry of deadly exchanges in and around the territory.

The latest round of Israeli attacks and Palestinian retaliation began with air strikes Monday morning, just hours after gunmen from Sinai carried out an ambush along Israel's southern border with Egypt, killing an Israeli civilian.

Israel has said that its sudden spike in Gaza operations was "in no way related" to the border incident, with the military saying the air force was targeting militants about to attack the Jewish state.
