Health First, Space Coast Health Foundation Combine To Serve ...

HEALTHCARE NEWS

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA ? After unanimous votes by both Boards of Directors, Health First and Space Coast Health Foundation (SCHF) have announced an agreement to settle the long-standing antitrust lawsuit and work together to enhance healthcare access and services in Brevard County.

Instead of spending time and money on court costs and legal fees, Health First and Space Coast Health Foundation (formerly Wuesthoff Health System), have put the anti-trust case behind them and entered into a confidential agreement that will create a new health program for Brevard County.

The program is in development and will enhance benefits for the underinsured in Brevard County.

Jim Shaw

?We are extremely pleased to have agreed on an arrangement that will end a series of legal actions and filings that has transpired over the past seven years,? said Jim Shaw, Board Chair of the Health First Board of Trustees.

?Both Health First and the Space Coast Health Foundation understand the tough economic challenges that are facing the communities that we serve and have agreed to work together, focusing our resources and efforts toward aggressively tackling the healthcare needs of the underinsured.?

Although the details of the agreement are not being disclosed, both Health First and the SCHF will dedicate resources to a new initiative to advance access and care for the underinsured of Brevard County.

Agreement Will Enhance Resources of Existing Health Agencies

This initiative will be overseen by representatives from both Health First and the SCHF, and will enhance the resources of existing health agencies that support and augment care for Brevard?s underinsured.

?We recognize that through collaboration, we can multiply the effects of our time and assets,? said Fran Pickett, Board Chair for the Space Coast Health Foundation. ?We want every resident of Brevard to know they have access to health and wellness resources.?

Steve Johnson

?The ending of this long-standing dispute between Health First and the Space Coast Health Foundation should signal to Brevard County residents our commitment to the importance of focusing our combined efforts on the community?s health,? said Steve Johnson, President/Chief Executive Officer of Health First.

?By eliminating all of the distractions and costly legal fees associated with this type of litigation, we are able to use more resources to provide better care to the community.?

?Our missions are in unison,? said Johnette Gindling, Executive Director of the Space Coast Health Foundation.

?Through our organizations? work, we both seek to enhance health and wellness in Brevard County for our residents.? Working together strengthens our efforts.?

Putting Aside Differences To Help Those In Need

In a demonstration of collaboration, transparency, and trust, Health First has also invited two individuals who serve on the SCHF Board of Directors to join the Health First Board of Trustees. Fran Pickett and James Dwight will join the Health First Board of Trustees in January 2013.

?The key component of the agreement is that by working together, Health First and the Space Coast Health Foundation are addressing a critical issue facing many in our community,? said Johnson.

?More than 20 percent of the residents of Brevard County are without health insurance or considered underinsured. ?Through this agreement, we are pleased to put aside differences and help those in need.?

Environmental group says don't "blow" this opportunity when it comes to wind energy incentives

ROANOKE, Va.?

"Our message today to Congress, don't throw wind off the fiscal cliff," says Sarah Bucci, Environment Virginia.

The clock is ticking and this group doesn't want to be caught under the buzzer.

Explains Bucci, "Incentives are benefits in place to build wind farms here in Virginia. So, it's important for this budding industry that we extend these credits at the national level as well as well as all of our own state policies."

Environment Virginia says as of December 31st incentives which would help build wind turbines, such as these, will run out.

Environmental and health experts say this clean form of energy is where our cash strapped, fuel dependent nation should go.

"I'm concerned about protecting Virginia open spaces, but we need to develop renewable resources -energy resources as an alternatives to fossil fuels," explains former Roanoke City Council member Dr. Rupert Cutler.

But, wind farms aren't always popular.
A proposal to bring about 15-turbines to Poor Mountain in Roanoke County met mixed reviews last year.

"It doesn't seem that anywhere along the way we've looked at the ecological aspects," said Wind Project Opponent Ed Kinser in September 2011.

Wind Project Opponent Bert Bondurant agreed during that same interview in 2011, "And i have a concern that the board of supervisors doesn't fully appreciate the treasure that is esstenially in their trust to preserve."

Many are concerned about adding an eye sore on the ridge.
But, others say the area is far from untouched.

Says Sierra Club Conservation Chair Dan Crawford, "Poor mountain is not pristine. If you go up there that's where we have our antennas and microwave towers."

Many wonder the status of the Poor Mountain project.

Roanoke County Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard Flora says even though Roanoke County amended its zoning and set conditions for wind use, it hasn't heard from the group since those changes have been made.

Invenergy, the group behind the Poor Mountain plan, says it continues to "work on development plans" and looks forward to working in Virginia.

30 Tenn. courthouses receive bomb threats

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? Bomb threats to 30 courthouses and other government buildings across Tennessee forced many to be evacuated Tuesday, including the federal building in Memphis, but authorities said no explosives were found.

Tennessee became the fourth state to deal with similar bomb hoaxes. One targeted 28 courthouses in Oregon and similar threats were reported in Nebraska and Washington this month.

Nine threats were reported in West Tennessee counties ? including the Memphis federal building ? seven in Middle Tennessee and 14 in East Tennessee, said Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security spokeswoman Dalya Qualls.

No arrests have been made in Tennessee and authorities had searched about 14 courthouses by Tuesday afternoon.

Jeremy Heidt, a spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, said the threats were made by telephone to court clerk offices. "It's been going on all morning," said Heidt.

The threats to courthouses in Ashland City and Clinton were made by men.

"It was just a man's voice saying simply if this is the Cheatham County Courthouse you're about to be blown up, and it startled me. So I just said I'm sorry. I tried to get him to repeat himself and that's when it just cut off and I thought 'Oh my,'" Cheatham County deputy clerk Rebecca Nicholson told WTVF-TV.

Anderson County Clerk Jeff Cole told The Knoxville News Sentinel that a man's voice simply said "There's a bomb in the building" and hung up.

The FBI is working closely with state authorities and will pursue federal charges if necessary, said Joel Siscovic, the bureau's spokesman in Memphis.

The federal building in Memphis houses the federal court and offices for the Department of Justice, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen. It was cleared around 9 a.m. for a couple of hours while authorities checked it.

Police temporarily blocked a trolley line that ran by the federal building in Memphis and brought in a dog to search the building before letting people return around 11 a.m.

According to Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph, a woman called police around 8:30 a.m. and said she had information that someone was going to blow up the county criminal justice center, the federal building and a main U.S. Post Office in the city.

All three locations were searched and nothing was found, she said.

CRM Is Yesterday's Answer To the Wrong Problem | Social Media ...

Why doesn't CRM work? Because its an answer to the wrong problem. Another heretical thought from the people who suggest sales managers need to change just about everything.Of course, that's nothing to do with the technology, and everything to do with the way its used. It's the bean counters' tool for controlling sales people.
The original sales pitch for CRM was really quite innovative, and engaging, and very attractive to the big software companies who'd max'd out the ERP market with solutions for the Millennium Bug problem. ?The consultants loved it too. It was a new way of keeping the gravy train running, with big companies spending even bigger budgets on software to fix problems they didn't understand.

Understand more about your customers. Get on top of sales. Make your business more predictable. CRM is the answer.

In all too many cases CRM has been simply about collecting information from the sales team about how hard they were working, and where they were getting it wrong. And that's why it's yesterday's answer to the wrong problem. Today's problem is the sales people don't have systems to help them do a better job in the new paradigm.

In today?s flatter, faster world, prospects are smarter and better informed. They?re suspicious of claims made by sellers, more demanding of personalised offers, insistent on controlling the relationship. Vendors must know what will make the customer happy, prove how they?ll deliver it, and do it at a price which can be paid.

  • Sales managers need to evolve from lion tamers into engineers, with resources, strategies and processes which can be continuously improved.
  • Sales people need to evolve from robotic drones into intelligent capable entrepreneurs ? business people who can develop value adding and sharing relationships with customers.
  • The sales model needs to evolve, targeting the right prospects, defining a scope of delivery, planning and executing a process through which both buyer and seller agree what will work for both parties, and how that will be achieved, and paid for.
  • Businesses need to evolve. Instead of simply making product because they can, they need to offer value propositions customers want, and can be delivered. They need a sales strategy to decide which offers are put to which potential customers, and how. They need a sales process which minimizes the cost of sale, by not selling to those unlikely to buy.

They need ?business people? sales guys who can collaborate, negotiate and manage. And they need to measure the results, and find ways to improve the efficiency of the process. They need a continuous cycle of improvement ? just like the engineers in the factories.

And the sales people need systems to help them do it, not software which helps beancounters measure the wrong numbers.

Why doesn?t the traditional approach to selling and sales management work so well any more? What can the modern sales professional do to stay relevant in today?s customer driven markets?? Check out our eBook?Reengineering Sales Management?for ideas on how to embrace the new order of customer driven buyer/seller relationships.

Shock troops mobilised in Dictionary Corner

Now, Dr Burchfield did not have infinity at his command. His project had already taken over his life. He had neglected his first love, the Ormulum. The Ormulum is not a musical instrument but an endless treatise by a 12th-century monk from Lincolnshire called Orm, or as he insisted on spelling it, Orrm. For the interest (if any) of this unique manuscript is the author?s idiosyncratic spelling system. The Ormulum has never been properly edited and printed. It would have made Burchfield?s name. Instead he slogged away at the OED. Much thanks he got.

So his four supplementary vols had to be kept within limits. There was no point, he declared in his introduction, in including foreign regional words being covered in specialist dictionaries of American English, Canadianisms or Jamaican English.

I can?t see why Dr Ogilvie is over-excited. She complains, for example, that Burchfield ?was going against OED policy? by dropping the 1933 Supplement?s entry for chimney-sweeper. Now, it would be bad if future generations were left puzzled by a word in Shakespeare?s couplet: ?Golden lads and girls all must, / As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.? But, no, the sense of chimney-sweeper that Burchfield chose not to incorporate into his bulging volumes was: ?The sooty powder on the flowering parts of corn-plants.?

Today an online lexicographer can find room for any hapax-legomenon or even ghost words such as abacot, supposed by many a dictionary to have been a cap of state worn by English kings, but in truth a misreading for ?a bycoket?. No tree need die to record aberglaube or danchi, calabazilla or igloowik (?a kind of igloo?).

It was not so in Burchfield?s day. Every word was consigned to paper by hand. The indefatigable Marghanita Laski, when not appearing on What?s My Line?, was sending in 100,000 ink-written slips with citations of words. Sir St Vincent Troubridge sent thousands connected with the theatre, scribbled on the backs of envelopes.

It all had to be set in type, printed on paper and sold. An endless, unaffordable dictionary would have foundered, as had similar enterprises in France or Germany.

To my mind, the worst kinds of new dictionaries purport to embrace all ?World English?. They sound all relaxed and Andy Kershawish but soon lose their bearings. The Encarta World English Dictionary (1999), which contained mistakes, was sensibly republished as the Bloomsbury English Dictionary five years later.

James Murray, the son of a village tailor from Hawick who aged into the greybeard father of the OED, had it right. He drew a diagram of English resembling a spiny sea-cucumber. The radial spines were marked Scientific, Technical, Dialectal, Slang, and Foreign. Those spines might be studied by specialist lexicographers. The prey of the OED was the sea-cucumber?s body, and this was marked in big letters COMMON. ?The English language has a well-defined centre but no discernible circumference,? was the dictum of the OED that Burchfield quoted with approval. Let not his name, daily blessed by dictionary-ramblers, be blackened by world-English guerrillas.

Yahoo's stock hits $19 for 1st time since 2010

(AP) ? Yahoo's shares touched $19 Monday, the first time they have traded that high in more than two and half years.

The latest gains extend a rally that has been gaining momentum in recent weeks as Yahoo Inc. buys back its own stock and more investors bet on CEO Marissa Mayer's ability to turn around the long-struggling company.

Mayer, a former top executive at Internet search leader Google Inc., became Yahoo's fifth CEO in less than a year when the company hired her in July. Since her arrival, Mayer has vowed to make Sunnyvale, Calif., company a better place to work, refine its online services and roll out more products tailored for smartphones and tablet computers.

Yahoo has also been trying to boost its stock price by spending most of money that it received from a recent deal to buy back its own shares.

After taxes, the company pocketed $4.3 billion by selling half its stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba Group Ltd. Mayer has pledged to spend $3.6 billion buying back Yahoo's stock, including $600 million that had gone toward share repurchases before the Alibaba deal closed in mid-September.

Yahoo had spent $212 million buying back 13 million shares from Oct. 1 through Nov. 8, according to a recent regulatory filing, with $928 million spent so far this year.

Since Mayer made the buyback commitment, Yahoo's stock has climbed by nearly 20 percent. The shares hit $19 in Monday's early trading for the first time since April 2010.

Goldman Sachs analyst Heath Terry believes Yahoo's stock will climb even higher, as more investor enthusiasm builds for Mayer's turnaround strategy and the value of the company's remaining holdings in Asian Internet companies becomes clearer. Besides retaining a 24 percent stake in Alibaba, Yahoo also owns 35 percent of Yahoo Japan. He also thinks Yahoo's stock will get a boost from future buybacks planned by Yahoo.

In a Monday research report, Terry raised his price target for Yahoo's shares to $24 from $22. The price targets of 15 other analysts surveyed by FactSet range from $16.50 to $22.

After climbing to $19 in Monday's early trading, Yahoo shares closed at $18.75, up 18 cents.

Xbox Creator Speaks On Ouya - Game Informer

Ed Fries started his career working for Microsoft, where he worked up to become the head of Microsoft?s Game Division. Now Fries is acting as an advisor on the Kickstarter-funded Ouya project ? which aims to put a custom-based Android operating system into a console box. The system is set to release early next year, but we briefly chatted with Fries about his thoughts on the Ouya and how it compares to the release of the original Xbox.

You?re on the advisory board for Ouya. What drew you to that project?
A lot of times why people want me to be an adviser these days is just cause I am pretty connected in the gaming business, so I can help hook them up with different developers who might be interested or maybe hardware companies who might also be able to help, or I can just give advice from my experience in working in the console business. I try to do all of those things with Ouya. It?s fun to be part of a small team, small project, that was Kickstarted. It?s a great example of something that just couldn?t happen a few years ago. You couldn?t build competitive hardware just like that using off the shelf parts; you couldn?t fund it through crowd-source funding. The big cool developers wouldn?t have been interested in that. All these pieces had to fall into place to make Ouya possible. So, to me it was more like an opportunistic thing, these guys saw, ?Ah, all these little pieces that we need to do this are all lying out there, what if we just do it?? It?s not even risky really, it?s like, ?We?ll put it up on Kickstarter and people will like it or they won?t, if they like it then we?ll make it.? It?s almost sort of a free-to-play attitude up around a console launch, put your game out there and see what happens early on, as opposed to building it in secret for years.?

When you guys started working on the original Xbox, the concept was to put Microsoft Windows and Direct X in a stand along box. Now, Ouya is looking to put Android into a console box. Do you see that as a kind of spiritual successor in a way?
I hadn?t thought of it that way. I think the thing about Ouya that?s interesting to me, there?s sort of this obvious need that?s not being met. There?s sort of this need for this open console that?s digitally distributed, and it?s just not there. Apple isn?t doing it, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo aren?t really doing it. And so, Ouya is just kind of stepping into this opportunity for various historical reasons that no one else wants to go into. So I don?t know, Xbox was a little different than that I think.

Ouya had a Kickstarter goal of less than a million, but it ended up raising over eight; did the response to the Ouya concept surprise you guys at all?
I asked the CEO that, Julie Ehrman, the other day and she said absolutely, it absolutely surprised her. I guess I didn?t think about it enough at the time to have an opinion about whether it would work or not. It was kind of like, ?Let?s just try it and see,? but it has been exciting to watch it grow and be part of it.

Do you feel that the process of launching a new console in the market has changed quite a bit in the last 10 years?
I think it?s going to have an impact on the way consoles and developers interact in the future. It?s getting harder and harder for the traditional consoles to ignore the Apple kind of experience. Anybody can develop for the platform, certification is a relatively cheap and painless thing, and in the old days of consoles there are all sorts of myths and legends that say that?s a bad thing to do. That?s why the game business melted down in ?84, there was too much junk on the market, but now you?ve got guys who make games like Fez who can?t do an update to their game because it costs too much, if that game was on iOS that wouldn?t be a problem, but because it?s on XBLA it?s a problem. Those kinds of ideas have to go away in the next generation. They?ll go away in Ouya, they?ll go away if Apple brings some kind of product into this space, the console makers like Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, they have to respond to that, it?s just the future. Likewise they have to respond to the free-to-play game model, the world is changing, people want this free-to-play experience, game developers want to build free-to-play experiences and the console ecosystem has to adapt to that. It can?t just be $50 product in a box all the time.

Do you see Ouya as a direct competitor to Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, or is it kind of like it?s own thing?
No I don?t think they see themselves that way, I think they see a market niche opportunity, they don?t know how big it?s going to be, but it?s already big enough just through Kickstarter to make it happen. We?ll just see how it goes.?

More than 100 killed in Bangladesh factory fire

Bangladeshi firefighters battle a fire at a garment factory in the Savar neighborhood in Dhaka, Bangladesh, late Saturday.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 3:25 p.m. ET: DHAKA, Bangladesh -- At least 112 people were killed in a fire that raced through a multi-story garment factory just outside of Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, an official said Sunday.

The blaze broke out late Saturday at the eight-story factory operated by Tazreen Fashions Ltd., a subsidiary of the Tuba Group, which supplies Walmart and other major retailers in the U.S. and Europe.?

By Sunday morning, firefighters had recovered 100 bodies, fire department Operations Director Maj. Mohammad Mahbub told The Associated Press. He said another 12 people who had suffered injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire later died at hospitals. The death toll could rise as the search for victims was continuing, he said.?

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed in the fire. The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, and authorities have ordered an investigation.?

Army soldiers and paramilitary border guards were deployed to help police keep the situation under control as thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives of the factory workers gathered at the scene, Mahbub said. He would not say how many people were still missing.?

Working conditions at Bangladeshi factories are notoriously poor, with little enforcement of safety laws, and overcrowding and locked fire doors are common. The cause of this fire was not immediately known.?

Tazreen was given a "high risk" safety rating after May 16, 2011, audit conducted by an ethical sourcing assessor for Wal-Mart, according to a document posted on the Tuba Group's website. It did not specify the conditions or violations that led to the rating.?

A spokesman for Wal-Mart said online documents indicating that the factory received an orange or "high risk" assessment after the May 2011 inspection and a yellow or "medium risk" report after an inspection in August 2011 appeared to pertain to the factory where the fire occurred.?

The August 2011 letter said Wal-Mart would conduct another inspection within one year. Spokesman Kevin Gardner said it was not clear if that inspection had been conducted, or if the factory was still making products for Wal-Mart.?

If a factory is rated "orange" three times in a two-year period, Wal-Mart won't place any orders for one year. The May 2011 report was the first orange rating for the factory.?

There was no indication whether the violations had been fixed since the May inspection. Neither Tazreen's owner nor Tuba Group officials could be reached for comment.?

The Tuba Group is a major Bangladeshi garment exporter whose clients include Walmart, Carrefour and IKEA, according to its website. Its factories export garments to the U.S., Germany, France, Italy and The Netherlands, among other countries. The Tazreen factory, opened in 2009 and employing about 1,700 people, makes polo shirts, fleece jackets and T-shirts.?

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.?

In its 2012 Global Responsibility report, Walmart said that "fire safety continues to be a key focus for brands and retailers sourcing from Bangladesh." Walmart said it ceased working with 49 factories in Bangladesh in 2011 due to fire safety issues, and was working with its supplier factories to phase out production from buildings deemed high risk.?

At the factory scene, relatives of the workers were frantically looking for their loved ones. Sabina Yasmine said she saw the body of her daughter-in-law, who died in the fire, but had no trace of her son, who also worked at the factory.?

"Oh, Allah, where's my soul? Where's my son?" wailed Yasmine, who works at another factory in the area. "I want the factory owner to be hanged. For him, many have died, many have gone."

Mahbub said firefighters recovered 69 bodies from the second floor of the factory alone. He said most of the victims had been trapped inside the factory, located just outside of Dhaka, with no emergency exits leading outside the building.?

Many workers who had taken shelter on the roof of the factory were rescued, but firefighters were unable to save those who were trapped inside, Mahbub said.?

He said the fire broke out on the ground floor, which was used as a warehouse, and spread quickly to the upper floors.?

"The factory had three staircases, and all of them were down through the ground floor," Mahbub said. "So the workers could not come out when the fire engulfed the building."?

"Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower," he said.?

Many of the victims were burned beyond recognition. The recovered bodies were kept in rows on the premise of a nearby school.?

Meanwhile, many of the bodies were handed over to families but at least 60 bodies remained unidentified till late Sunday, said police official Moshiuddoula, who uses one name. The unclaimed bodies were later taken to Dhaka Medical College where the corpses will be kept until Monday morning for identification.?

Otherwise, the bodies will be handed over to a charity organization, Anjuman-e-Mufidul Islam, for burial, said local chief government administrator Sheikh Yusuf Harun. The charity group is a voluntary organization which buries unclaimed bodies.?

By late Sunday, firefighters had concluded their search and left the scene, the fire department's control room duty officer Bhajan Sarker told The Associated Press by phone.?

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock at the loss of so many lives in the blaze and asked authorities to conduct thorough search-and-rescue operations.?

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said it would stand by the victims' families.?

Separately, a flyover under construction fell onto a busy market, leaving at least 14 people dead including three construction workers in southeastern city of Chittagong, an official said Sunday.?

Local fire official Abdul Mannan said the concrete structure collapsed on Saturday night, and authorities recovered the bodies by Sunday morning from under the debris in the second-largest city after Dhaka.?

Y Combinator Interviews Start Tomorrow, Make Sure You Know YC ...

It?s that time of the year again. Lucky applicants who got selected for an interview with three Y Combinator partners will pitch their startup starting tomorrow. Founders will have exactly 10 minutes, so they shouldn?t waste time with small talk. It might be a good idea to learn everything about the partners beforehand, and especially what they look like. A page made by designers Jeremy Le Van and Pierre Valade will help you with that.

From Tuesday to Saturday, Y Combinator partners will spend hours at a time selecting the Winter 2013 class. Due to Hurricane Sandy, the application deadline was slightly delayed and founders had until November 2 to apply. Everything is back to the normal schedule now. But the incubator accepts late applications from time to time.

For the Summer 2012 class, 75 startups graduated and presented their startup in front of the press and investors. As a reminder, accepted companies receive between $11,000 and $20,000 of funding, three months of advice, support and connections, and make a presentation during the demo day. More importantly, startups join the Y Combinator alumni network.

But before all that, teams have to present a compelling idea and in the proper way. Applicants can browse the unofficial YC list, powered by Seed-DB and CrunchBase, and get in touch with recent graduates. Some of them will be there in the waiting area before the interviews. They may provide helpful advice. But you shouldn?t forget as well to study a face book in order to know who you are talking to and what their area of expertise is. It will definitely be an asset.

Y Combinator is a venture fund which focuses on seed investments to startup companies. It offers financing as well as business consulting along with other opportunities to 2-4 person companies looking to take an idea to a product. Y Combinator looks for companies with ?good? ideas over companies with experience and a business model. The company made its first investments in Summer 2005. Y Combinator selects companies to finance and consult with twice a year. They are located in...

Robb Wolf - Testimonial - Escaping The Fat Genes

Monday, November 26th, 2012

Written by: Alex Peterson

?The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. ?Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.?
-George Bernard Shaw,?Maxims for Revolutionists

From where I started, where I am now, and what I?ve learned along the way. ?Writing about myself has always been difficult, as I?ve always been an advocate of humility. ?But with that said, I?ll do my best to bypass the boring parts and make this a somewhat entertaining read. ?I?ll attempt to shed some light on my diet and training history in an effort to give you a small taste of the haphazard philosophizing I partake in. ?Please forgive any mindless ranting.

I thought I had rid the Earth of such pictures but fortunately for hilarity?s sake this one survived.? That?s this guy?in all his glory at 12 or something like that, I can?t even say exactly when. ?For a long time I thought I couldn?t escape the ?fat genes? no matter what I did. So much for that.

Fast-forward to high-school. ?Grew a foot after freshman year and came out of total hopelessness. ?I won?t go as far as to say I was a good athlete in high school, but I was respectable in the sports I played. ?I did a little bit of lifting here and there but I never had an organized program or any legitimate goals. ?In retrospect I was downright weak for my size and overall still pretty chubby. ?Seems like despite constant involvement in athletics I just couldn?t escape the fat genes.

Now on to college where I went on to play baseball my first two years while living in the dorms. ?I remember thinking how it was such a blessing to have the cafeteria conveniently located in the same building where I roomed. ?Luck of the draw right? ?I remember strength testing in the fall, and not being able to complete a single pullup or dip. ?Despite year-round baseball I miraculously managed to put on 10 pounds. ?Not a good 10 pounds. ?I guess all-you-can-eat cafeteria food combined with copious amounts of booze is a bad idea for those looking to get in shape? ?Who?d have thought. ?Freshman beware

A few years into college experience, I was home stuffing my face with all the delicacies that accompany Christmas dinner when my cousin introduced me to crossfit and the paleo diet. ?I didn?t necessarily implement either of these right away, but it did make me think about the way I was approaching my health and fitness. ?I got back to school, and decided to get serious about losing weight and getting in shape. ?Over the next 4 months I proceeded to lose 15 pounds. ?How did I do this you might ask?!? ?By joining the fanny-pack toting crowd and pushing myself to damn near rhabdomyolysis with a steady combination of the following factors:

Training: Bicep curls, leg-presses, plus whatever the hell else I felt like doing 5 days a week. ?Oh and don?t forget the steady-state cardio that?s ?essential? for proper cardiovascular health and fat-loss.
Diet: Steep Calorie-Restriction, 5-6 small meals a day, and protein shakes

I somehow lost the weight, but it was an experience I?d rather forget. ?I constantly suffered from overtraining and all of the negative side-effects associated with it. ?I barely had the energy to get through the day, let alone exercise, and I was constantly prone to binge-eating. ?Ah good times with entire boxes of cereal.? I felt like shit, but hey, I looked good! ?I became obsessed with losing ?the last 5 pounds? which was the bane of my existence. ?I drove myself into further calorie restriction and pushed myself even more, despite my body screaming at me for a break. ?Eventually, I did break. ?I felt weak and defeated. ?I most likely had the testosterone levels of a Ken doll. ?It was time for a change in thinking.

Enter the Paleo phenomenon. ?I began to pay strict attention to my nutrition in combination with a 3 day strength program involving compound movements with heavy squatting, pressing, and pulling. ?I quit counting calories, balancing macronutrients, and timing my meals. ?I ate when I was hungry and until I was full regardless of how many meals that entailed. ?In fact, most days I ended up eating 2-3 meals because I was rarely hungry, yet I seemed to have endless energy. ?The result? ?An added 15 lbs of muscle mass and a significant improvement in body composition in 4 short months. ?I?ve since added ten more pounds to that, which I?ve maintained effortlessly. ?As a result the kid who couldn?t complete a single dip or pullup now has some pretty solid strength numbers:

  • 37 bodyweight dips
  • 16 strict pull-ups
  • A 1270 Crossfit Football total
  • 6?2?? 210 pounds

Robb and others in the Paleo community helped develop my unquenchable thirst for knowledge regarding nutrition and fitness.? I can?t thank them enough for all that they do.? Their dedication has inspired me to help others have the same success I?ve had by focusing on nutrition and performance.? Nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping others reach their performance goals.? I only hope that I can give as much back to the paleo community as it?s given me.? You can check out the website I started at: www.wholemusclegains.com

I know I?ve beaten this dead horse, but I?ll say it again.? The best advice I can give to anyone looking to improve their body composition is to focus on performance.? For a long time I was obsessed with aesthetics.? It was an infuriatingly unsuccessful period in my training, and in the end it just created additional stress. Develop some solid performance goals and the rest will fall in place.

Women won this time, but men are voting's X-factor

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Sorry, fellas, but President Barack Obama's re-election makes it official: Women can overrule men at the ballot box.

For the first time in research dating to 1952, a presidential candidate whom men chose decisively ? Republican Mitt Romney ? lost. More women voted for the other guy.

It's surprising it didn't happen sooner because women have been voting in larger numbers than men for almost three decades, exit polls show.

But men, who make up less than half the U.S. population, always have exercised power greater than their numbers and they aren't about to stop now.

When it comes to elections, males as a group are more influential because they show less party loyalty than women, who skew Democratic.

Despite all the focus on candidates courting Hispanics or the working class, men are the nation's ultimate swing voters; they're why Republican George W. Bush became president and Republican John McCain didn't.

Their move away from Obama this year expanded the voting "gender gap." It wasn't enough to determine the outcome, but came close.

So presidential hopefuls staring into the gender gap in 2016 might want to look beyond the usual controversies over "women's issues" such as abortion or the polling fads such as "Wal-Mart moms." Maybe it's time to pause and consider the fickle male. Maybe it's time to ask, "What do men want?"

In the voting booth, that is.

"I don't think we fully understand it yet," political scientist Christina Wolbrecht of the University of Notre Dame said about why men and women vote differently. But she said plenty of research on elections going back to the 1950s indicates it's not because of issues such as equal pay, birth control coverage in health plans or Romney's awkward reference to "binders full of women."

Paul Kellstedt has some ideas. A Texas A&M associate professor of political science, Kellstedt studies what American men and women want from their government and how that shifts over time.

Like Wolbrecht, he noted that the sexes aren't that different, at least when it comes to the issues.

Studies have found that the opinions that separate liberals and conservatives, even on issues such as abortion, don't divide the sexes much. Men and women are about as likely to fall on either side of those debates, and millions of each happily line up with each political party.

But there has been a consistent thread of disagreement for decades over what role the government should play. It's not a big gap, but it is statistically significant, about 4 percentage points or 5 points in many studies, Kellstedt said. As a group, women tend to like bigger government with more health and welfare programs; men lean toward smaller government that spends less, except on the military.

Sort of the social safety net versus rugged individualism. Or Obama versus Romney.

There are lots of possible reasons the genders see this differently.

Besides women's traditional role as family nurturers, they also live longer than men and so are more likely to rely on Social Security and Medicare. Women are more likely to be poor. They're more likely to be single parents struggling to pay for child care, education and medical bills. Men may feel many social programs are expensive and won't benefit them.

"Women tend to believe that government has a role to play, that it should be a partner in their life," said Democratic pollster Celinda Lake. "Men tend to think it's been a good day when the government hasn't done anything bad to you."

When the nation as a whole drifts to the left or right on the big government-small government debate, the gap between men and women fluctuates. Men and women shift their views in the same direction, Kellstedt said, but men as a group tend to change their minds faster and move their views farther.

"The variation among men's opinions is larger," he said. "The flighty, moody ones are the men, not the women."

He said this difference of opinion on the role of government isn't big enough to entirely explain the larger gender gap in voting, however. "It's a little bit of a puzzle."

Women as a group voted Democratic in the past six presidential races, from 1992 through 2012, according to exit polls. The last time they decisively supported a Republican was Ronald Reagan's re-election in 1984. The Reagan years were when Americans first began taking note of the "gender gap," as women's rights groups emphasized that female support for Reagan in 1980 was narrow while male voters overwhelmingly endorsed him.

Men lean Republican but play the field. In the past six presidential races, men voted Republican three times, Democratic twice (including barely supporting Obama in 2008), and essentially split their vote in the 1996 Bill Clinton-Bob Dole race, exit polls show.

This year Obama campaigned on giving a leg up to those needing education, health care or job training. Romney talked about shrinking government, except for the military, and said overgrown social programs were creating a culture of dependency. Their arguments fit the long-running fissure of the gender gap.

"Women stuck with Obama," said Karen Kaufmann, a University of Maryland associate professor who studies the gender gap. "We didn't see a lot of movement from women. The movement was really men going back to the Republican Party."

Women's support for Obama dropped just 1 percentage point from 2008; they voted for him by 55 percent to 44 percent this time. Men's support for Obama dropped 4 points, flipping them to Romney's side, by a 52-45 margin. Women were 10 percentage points more likely to vote for Obama than men were, according to the survey of voters at the polls conducted for The Associated Press and television networks.

Gallup polling has tracked the gender gap since 1952. Gallup says this year's gender divide was 20 percentage points, the largest ever using its method of calculation.

The gender gap isn't just a white thing. It exists even among minorities that vote overwhelmingly Democratic. Obama got 96 percent of black women's votes, but 87 percent of black men's, compared with 76 percent of Hispanic women and 65 percent of Hispanic men, according to the exit poll.

"We group together this white male vote and sort of put that in the Republican ledger and we don't talk enough about all the various subgroups that fit within men and the multiple issues and currents that determine how they're going to vote," said sociologist Donald Levy, director of the Siena College's research institute.

"The Democrats aren't succeeding with some of these folks," Levy said. The Democratic Party needs to figure out why, he said, the same way "the Republicans are doing some soul-searching about how they can appeal to women."

Gateway enzyme for chemicals from catnip to cancer drug

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Scientists have discovered an enzyme used in nature to make powerful chemicals from catnip to a cancer drug, vinblastine. The discovery opens up the prospect of producing these chemicals cheaply and efficiently.

They are produced naturally by some plants such as the medicinal Madagascar periwinkle, but faster-growing plants could be used to produce them. With synthetic biology, improvements could also be made to them.

The study, to be published in Nature on Thursday, was led by scientists from the John Innes Centre, an institute on Norwich Research Park strategically funded by BBSRC.

"Thousands of chemicals are derived from the enzyme we have called iridoid synthase," says senior author Dr Sarah O'Connor from the JIC and the University of East Anglia.

"We can start to use it to come up with new-to-nature structures with biological activity of benefit to both medicine and agriculture."

Many aphids, often important agricultural pests, produce sex pheromone chemicals that are identical to or that closely resemble the iridoid synthase product. Strategic use of these iridoid chemicals could be used to disrupt the aphids' breeding cycle or to repel them from crops.

The anticancer ingredient vinblastine sulphate is currently derived from the Madagascar periwinkle plant. The iridoid synthase is an essential step in the production of this compound. But vinblastine is produced in just very low levels and the drug has many side effects. The hope is to find a way to produce it more cheaply, easily and with a chemical structure that lessens side effects.

"We need to identify more enzymes to see the entire pathway used in nature to make this potent compound," said Dr O'Connor.

"But the enzyme we have discovered is also the basic scaffold for many other iridoid chemicals and we can start to experiment with building new chemical structures with biological activity."

The backbone of all iridoids consists of two fused rings and scientists have been trying to track down what makes this ring system. Experiments showed that iridoid synthase is the enzyme responsible.

Scientists already knew the enzyme preceeding iridoid synthase and how the gene encoding it is expressed. The lead author, Dr Fernando Geu-Flores from JIC, therefore looked for enzymes that are encoded by genes expressed in a similar way and narrowed down their search to 20 enzymes.

Research published in the 1980s indicated that the missing enzyme is dependent on a particular compound called NADPH, which narrowed the search down to two enzymes.

O'Connor and her co-workers will also investigate whether the enzyme is important in a simple chemical reaction used by chemists for nearly 100 years. Scientists are trying to identify which enzymes catalyse a reaction called the Diels-Alder reaction, named after the Nobel prize-winning scientists who discovered it. A better understanding of how the iridoid synthase works could open up new ways to make pharmaceutical compounds using synthetic biology.
